Discussion: READ: Joint Statement From Trump, Kim Jong Un Committing To Denuclearization

I won’t pretend to know how this works, but this appears to be more a press release from the White House than a joint statement. No signatures, and the author knows who will represent the US in negotiations, but no idea who is representing North Korea.

Looks like a simple Nobel positioning statement to me. Nothing in there that wasn’t said in the last week.

Do they actually commit to anything? Besides meeting again?

What did the US get from NK in return for the meeting with the US President that NK has craved for decades? I can’t find any actual actions specified in this statement.

By “denuclearization” I think Lil’ Kim means Yankee go home.

I don’t care to be cynical, but I’lol believe it when I see it.

If Trump can renege on a ‘deal’, so can anyone.

Well now we can all rest easy, there was no nuptial agreement.

I can’t wait for Sen. Tom Cotton to write one of his patented letters to the DPRK over this.

And when John Bolton and the two Republican Congressional Caucuses see this, they will no doubt blow their top! This is the JCPOA on steroids, except that it has none of the deliverables, milestones nor any of the on-site monitoring. Their meltdown will be epic!

…Oh, wait…

So in other words absolutely nothing was accomplished, but a photo op. Kim gets to go back puffed up because he brought an American President to the table and Trump gets to come home and pretend he was a diplomat for 30 seconds. And lets be clear even if something momentous had happened it wouldn’t change the fact that Trump is a lying and corrupt President. Did China make Nixon a great President?

My question if it was so spontaneous and we didn’t know what was going to happen , where did those nice books and printed agreement come from?

Good job Trump /s Kim went from being an isolated dictator from an impoverished backwater nation, to an international rock star. on an equal status with the most powerful nation on earth.

While at the same time Trump is alienating most of our closest allies.

Putin’s having a great summit.

NK doesn’t even need to renege on this “deal”. They’ve agreed to nothing AFAICT.

Maybe there are some more details that haven’t been released yet, but so far there is no deal to renege (other than Kim not showing up for the next meeting with the President).

I don’t believe for a second that this “agreement” means anything at all, but the fact that they actually met face to face at all is the first truly surprising thing that’s happened during the entire trump presidency.

tRump actually talked about N.K.'s lovely beaches that would look great with brand new condos on them, at his press conference. I swear I was just joking yesterday when I posted this whole thing was about getting himself a tRump Tower in Pyongyang. I see now he has his heart set on the beaches. Goes to show you how little I underestimated the gall of tRump’s depravity.

He unilaterally agreed to stop “war games” (a NK term) or military exercises (as our country calls them) and for what?? And this one page statement isn’t worth the paper its written on. Its basically toilet paper. No timelines, no plans for implementation. Its not even very ambitious as a general statement. There are no consequences for failure to denuclearize. Just a statement of “committing to work towards”. That’s like saying I will try to work towards considering if I want to throw out the garbage tonight. Such bullshit.

And Justin Trudeau is the problem?

What do you want? OK. Deal.

No, they signed it:

Of course, Trump’s signature is worth as much as his signature on an IOU – i.e, worthless.

and I would venture to say that it will be about a nanosecond ,once he returns , before he steps in it and does or says something batshit crazy

This is a much stronger deal than that Iran piece of crap he threw out.

Specific timeline.
Inspectors.
Complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.
Backed, supported and joined in by other countries.

I am truly impressed.

But, really … this is less specific than any of 3 previous agreements.
When does Pompeo get to work? What does the “earliest possible date” mean? He should be stopping in South Korea, China, Japan and Russia on the way home. When do inspectors go in to see what they have, and what is the process for getting rid of it and verifying that? In fact, what gives Kim any incentive at all do do a fucking substantial thing?

ETA: At least he was tough on that brutal enemy dictator Trudeau.

And…
He didn’t have to do a thing
Trump has accomplished what he has been trying to do for the last 20 years

The effort to return the remains of our POW could have been done already if NK was serious.
