Discussion: READ: DOJ Inspector General Report On Comey And The Clinton Email Probe

What the report shows is that Comey was a self-serving, self-aggrandizing FBI director and that while he should have been fired by Obama over the Clinton investigation mishandling, he was wrongfully terminated by the Tangerine Twatwazzle as a way to obstruct the Russia investigation.

Too bad this report wasn’t out before his book tour.

Turns out, ironically, Comey used private email on a number of occasions to conduct government business.

Yes, but don’t forget how terribly troubled he was that he might have influenced the election. That makes up for everything, right?

I wonder if he’ll be hitting the media talk shows now or if he’ll lay low?

Now, the GOP is going to get all over Comey for holding a press conference himself. Back then they were all for it, and would have opened an investigation if Lynch had been the one to report the result.

Comey is clearly a loose cannon. This in no way excused our Orange Monster, by comparison a loose super nova, the destruction of a solar system.

As a card carrying Republican Comey had serious concerns, a number of serious reservations, and knew there were some issues about his press conference. That is why, as a card carrying Republican, he suppressed his concerns and reservations, overlooked the issues, and proceeded apace.

Indeed. The entire GOP was quite happy with Comey back on July 5, 2016.

I wonder if the IG looked at whether the “mid year” investigation was placed on the back burner so it could be launched close enough to the election to do harm no matter which way it went? This report seems to be tailored at answering things conventional wisdom was concerned with. Tailor made to give “both sides” enough to think it fair.

God the coverage is so bad, focusing on Peter Strock (who cares, lots of people have private beleifs, they guy hounded Clinton over the e-mails, which helped Trump). The take away from the report is that Clinton got hosed by Comey, and further that the conclusion at the end - that Clinton did nothing that was illegal and that should have been the end of it, and further that Loretta Lynch is a moron (no surprise there) who should have recused herself. yet the headlines are:

“Watchdog report blasts Comey, documents major missteps in FBI probe of Clinton’s e-mail” https://www.washingtonpost.com/

Unusually for the NYT which appears to have learned its lesson - having created this mess - the headline is better and more accurate: “Justice Dept. Says Comey was insubordinate in Clinton Inquiry” with a subheadline saying “The report gives President Trump new ammunition to criticize the F.B.I., but it does not fit into his theory that agents conspired to help Mrs. Clinton.” https://www.nytimes.com/

p.s. The media has an obligation to provide information that is relevent to the key issue. While Trump has claimed that the investigation of Clinton was a fraud - that is the REAL PUBLIC ISSUE - the report states that it found "no evidence that the conclusions by department prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations.”

yet, this is not, and should be the headline.

The FBI has been a loose cannon since its inception. It has been targeting and disrupting peaceful anti-war and civil-rights groups for decades. These activities did not stop under Comey (R-Obama Appointee).

The fact that the FBI building is still named after J. Edgar Hoover shows how little progress we have made.

Seems relevant.

Where’s this investigation? Where’s the affadavit that was supposed to be released today? What did Giuliani do?

“Under these circumstances, we did not have confidence that Strzok’s
decision to prioritize the Russia investigation over following up on the Midyear-related investigative lead discovered on the Weiner laptop was free from bias.” the IG said

Hmmm, let’s see. I have two cases before me. One is evidence of ongoing hostile foreign influence in an election coupled with possible kompromat blackmail of a presidential candidate. Another is a backup of past emails that we have already exhaustively investigated & cleared. Which case should I prioritize?

Obviously, if I don’t choose Her Emails, I must be biased.

Probably believes a redemption tour is in order?

Twenty lashes with limp spaghettini!

Oped in the NYT already https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/14/opinion/comey-clinton-inspector-general.html

no prosecutable case against Mrs. Clinton

Needless adjective implies there was some kind of case against her.

Apparently this was considered no biggie and not worth looking into or even mentioning. But private texts between romantic partners? That’s of the highest importance.

So… now we know… when every decision an FBI Director makes creates negative publicity for one major candidate while simultaneously hiding an investigation into foreign interference in favor of the other major candidate, that is inappropriate. It’s also entirely possible that might influence an election. I’m so glad we have that settled now.
