Discussion: Rand Paul: We're 'Trapped By Rhetoric' And The Word 'Amnesty'

Discussion for article #223825

I exercised my magical Powers of the Internets (at thesaurus.com) and was able to come up with the following solutions for Rand’s “Amnesty” problem:

forgiveness, immunity, absolution, repreive, condonation, dispensation, acquital, mercy, release, exculpation.

Unfortunately, they all sound like something Christ would do for no-good-niks, so the Tea Baggers won’t be interested.

Hell, if he used “exculpation” he wouldn’t have to worry about the “meaning different things to different people” since no one in the Tea Party would know what it means.

Well yeah, I think many Americans actually do feel “trapped by the rhetoric”
especially the rhetoric of the past six fricking years.

Aqua could do his part to ameliorate it by SingTFU.

Reagan was the Amnesty Granter in chief.

Obama’s proposal is a long, tough process to citizenship. Most of these people would prolly just settle for guest worker status.

Sucks that your wordsmiths ran with that to be ambiguous when fighting the Dems on it and now you can’t support anything because anything you say falls into that trap.

Remember when Lil’ Rand tried to rewrite the definition of “plagiarism”? Yeah, that didn’t work either.

This quote ‘implies’ that Rand Paul supports immigration reform. Next week Rand Paul will say something that ‘implies’ he doesn’t support it. That is the famous Paul family formula, say just enough on an issue to make everyone believe you support their position (whatever it is), then say something vague ‘I believe in liberty and the American people’, and then collect their money and votes.

This guy is on both sides of every issue, and is a master of it.

Here’s one Senator, how about ‘bus ticket’.

I mean, granted, Rand is correct, but it’s weird to see a Republican actually acknowledge this openly. It’s almost like hearing them say their overly simplistic anti-tax rhetoric makes budgeting more difficult than it has to be.

Even Aqua Buddha can see that trumpeting opposition to immigration reform and going the nativist route is a long-term death blow to the GOP.

Yup. Anything short of death camps is amnesty. Enjoy.

Kind of like how anything a Democrat does is raising taxes, really.

I’ve always said I was for it, I just vote against it to keep my job …

As soon as he gives up on that poodle skin he’s wearing he’ll look just like his father.

When your political party’s reality is cocooned in a bubble?
You are by definition-- always trapped.

The hell you say!

Safe! Safe from facts! That’s what they care about!

The GOP is trapped indeed by the word “amnesty” but then that was the whole point of using “amnesty” to describe any reform other than deportation.

“Amnesty” was designed to make it impossible for Republicans to ever support immigration reform. It’s tragic they that reform supporters are just now figuring this out.

I suspect that he’s harboring an undocumented poodle.

He reiterated his support for reform, and said that he would need more assurances that the border is secure.

Re: SOUTHERN border

“We’ve been somewhat trapped by rhetoric…

So they’re [trapped] by their racist, bigoted, misogynist, homophobic and xenophobic rhetoric…who’s fault is that exactly? And how does that saying by Walter Scott go: What a tangled web we weave…
