Discussion for article #224200
Rand, like his father Rue Ron, has the curious quality of making lucid, rationalâeven liberalâsense, precisely 1/2 of the time. This is one of those occasions.
"Jihadist Wonderland "
A place where âdonât miss the funnel-cakesâ takes on a whole new meaning.
I just assumed it was the toupee talking.
Not a bad assumptionâŚ
In this one particular instance, Rand is right.
Interventionism sucks and needs to end.
Heâs so proud of his bon mot he had to say it several times. But letâs hear something clever about bush invading Iraq, toppling a dictator who held it all together and has led to the wonderland we see today.
He wants to lead the non interventionist wing of the party, and heâs not going to get too far, he will simply be called an isolationist, Cheney got on his case immediately
Canât have the rubes under the dome thinking that itâs OK to not be 1000000% in favor of War Without EndâŚ
Well, he did stick two words together without consulting wikipedia - he should be proud.
He should be awarded a Plagiarists Anonymous chip any dayâŚ
Even the batshit crazy have their moments of lucidity.
Well now, Mr. Paul, not everything you say itâs completely true. The US and itâs many allies went into Iraq with the CIA provided intelligence, intelligence that was also agreed upon by Great Britain, Russia, Germany, China and France who believed Iraq had WMDs. Moreover, Saddam Hussein himself admitted after his capture that he bluffed about having WMDs in fear of Iran seeing his country as weak. Hussein ejection of the weapons inspectors and his refusal to allow them back in played well in that sense. Saddam Hussein was also known to sponsor Palestinian terrorists and he provided for years safe haven to people the like of Abu Nidal and Abu Abbas, sworn enemies of the USA. Hussein also displayed his ruthlessness by blindly targeting Israel with SCUD missiles during Desert Storm. He caused wars and turmoil around the region for decades, saying that the situation is worst now than before his demise is quite appalling.
In Libya a very reluctant Obama joined in the effort to overthrow Gaddafi well after Great Britain, France and Italy began military operations against that regime, so itâs not like the US acted unilaterally to get rid of a man who bombed American targets in Europe including a 747 full of Americans home bound. Moreover, in Libya the population itself began the process of ridding that Country of Gaddafi, we did not participate but in later stages.
After setting the record straight, I do however agree with you that we should stay out of Iraq at this point. It has become now a religious war and no longer is an anti terror or human rights support war. There is no winning for us in this mess. Maybe the time has come for the Middle East to soak itself in itâs own blood, like America did with the Civil War or Europe with 2 World Wars. Seems like the human race needs to see much horror before achieving much peace. No I do not want to risk my child life to help these medieval nuts, no I donât want any more Americaâs sons or daughters risk their lives either. But letâs not lie or tell half truths as well.
âItâs now a jihadist wonderland in Iraq, precisely because we got overinvolved, not because we had too little involvement, but too much involvement.â
He sort of did. That is pretty clearly saying that the Bushies getting involved created the mess we have today. He just didnât call them out by nameâŚbecause as a republican, it gains him no favors.
Gunfire is ringing
Are you listening
In the square
small arms are glistening
A beautiful sight,
ÂŽs are happy tonight
Walking in a jihad wonderland.

After reading your âprevious workâ here at TPM?
Your tortured use of grammar. The loose grasp of tense. The absence of punctuation.
Leads me to believe either:
- Youâve really brought your âA-gameâ today, or
- Youâve decided that if Rand Paul can plagiarize otherâs cogent writings and pass them off without attribution? You can too!
Iâm leaning toward 2).

I think he will get further there than you may realize. Kelly wasnât taking a bold risk by going after CheneyâŚshe has already looked at the numbers and knows that most republicans 1) Dont want to go back to Iraq and 2) Blame Cheney and Bush for going their in the first place.
Its quite shocking, but Cheneyâs support on this is extremely narrow. Basically hard core neocons, and thatâs it.
The real gain for Paul, however, is right nowâŚhe is the ONLY potential republican candidate that is taking an anti war stance. Others will follow, but he has plenty of time to define himself as the anti war candidate, and that everyone else is just following while he leads. Its a great campaign dynamic to run on if he can pull it off.
But it can backfire pretty fast, too. If he waffles, which he is very prone to do when confronted, he loses credibility. If this quiets down, and we donât get involved, it evaporates as a significant campaign issue and then he does become exposed to attacks of being an âisolationistââŚwhich is republican code for coward.
I will say this though, which is ancedotal, that there was a remarkable amount of Paul support around the Pensacola area (My family lives in the FL panhandle). Remarkable, because that area is incredibly dependent on Pentagon spending.
Yes, Libsâ work is #2âHeâs tapping his foot at the stall next-door while âdispensingâ his âwisdomââŚ
REALLY?? The Iraq war of choice was never an âanti-terrorâ or âhuman rightsâ excursionâŚ
Iraq is and was unbridled adventurism, a war for oil, an act of petty revenge by a midget POTUS and his global corporatist minions. IT WAS NEVER ABOUT TERRORISM OR HUMAN RIGHTS.
Bwahaha!! THE funniest thing youâve EVER posted! Lol!
If by âHusseinâ, you mean âGeorge W. Bushâ, then yes, he did eject the weapons inspectors. Just ask Scott Ritter.
Rand Paulâs cautionary tone is welcome, being that it is coming from a sea of chicken-hawk warmongers.
General Powell was correct when he warned: âIf you break it you own itâ in that we paid over $2 Trillion so far.
Cut bait. Offer assistance form a safe distance to those who demonstrate civility too their people. But itâs their land, and we need to stop running our Foreign Policies on Foreign Oils only benefiting the Oil Industry.
