Discussion: Rand Paul: Garner Chokehold Death Cop Shouldn't Be A Cop Anymore

Discussion for article #230946

Toot Toot! Here comes the RandWagon!

This guy has more positions than a windsock in a stiff breeze.

It’s so nice that such a decisive statement could be crafted by Rand Paul’s team of speechifiers only a week after the event! (Next up: Rand Paul makes a strident comment on the Rodney King trial verdict.)

You might want to lick the thread again there Rand, I think you missed the needle.

Yes, he flips back and forth on issue after issue, and his his economic views are batsh*t crazy. But the fact that he’s willing to at least say the right thing (if not actually do anything) when it comes to certain issues—let me put it this way, I prefer a GOP with Rand Paul than a GOP without Rand Paul.

This won’t help him with the Republican base. I’m beginning to wonder if he isn’t positioning himself for a third-party run – in, say, 2020.

He’ll run as something in 2016.
There’s no way he’ll give up a POTUS-election g(R)ifting-opportunity.
That’s big, national money. Learnt from DaddyRon.
He’s simply positioning himself to not be discounted/disqualified so early the PAC money dries up too soon.

I’m not a fan of Rand, but you know what? This is a stronger comment then I’ve seen many Dems make…

Though I note you used ā€˜many’ as a qualifier.
I give Bill DeBlasio credit-- and he’s hip-deep in it.

So, he mulls it over for a week, concedes the painfully obvious and then qualifies it with ā€œprobablyā€.

There’s leadership you can admire.

Sort of.

Jesus…Rando is sounding more like a Democrat all the time…His Tea Party base is going to be some pissed…So Rando…youre NOT getting the nomination…FOX ā€œnewsā€ and its shrills will tear you a new one after this…did you not read the Repugnician script sent over by Uncle Mitt’s Hispanic Driver??(who they’re still secretly hoping will NOT self deportā€¦ā€œwhat we say in public ain’t what we believe in private Jorge.ā€ā€¦wink wink) Wait until crazy Teddie Cruise gets a hold of this…yikes…nice (not) knowing you…

Somebody help me out here. If…IF…Garner was selling loose cigarettes, wouldn’t they likely have come from a pack, and assuming the pack wasn’t stolen (actually it wouldn’t matter since the tax is applied earlier) wouldn’t the tax already have been paid. If I buy 5 gallons of gas and then sell off single gallons the State didn’t lose anything. Why is it different for cigarettes in New York City? I’m confused.

Randy… Don’t take up windsurfing.

Boy, Shapeshifting Paul certainly has a lot of voters pegged.
On one hand, he follows the GOP talking point on taxes being the ones that choked Garner to death, and that feeds the red meat of his batty base.
Then a week later, he somewhat takes a position against the cop that killed Garner, and many on the left start swooning and giving him kudos, suggesting he’s better than a Democrat on said issue.
He’s done this regarding drones (adamantly against them, except if they were used on a liquor store robber). And airstrikes (he was against them before he was for them). Same with foreign aid (even for Israel but now his aides deny he said that, even though he did).

He sure knows how to play that fiddle, then watches each side dance, dance, dance…

Exactly. And by the way, the police searched his pockets when he was on the ground. I don’t remember seeing the stash of loosies.

I’m someone okay with what Rand said without being swayed into his court. I wish that more Repubs would come over into the sane camp (on this issue, right this minute, I realize he changes) like him AND I wish more Dems wouldn’t be afraid to voice their support for something that shouldn’t be that controversial.

I’m not going to shake my fist at others when they agree with me. Even if it’s temporary.

Big GOP donors who’ll be the deciders as to who the candidate will be are going to focus on Mitt, Christie and Jebby and Rand’s name has not come up. He’s small potatoes. What these donors are doing is beginning an effort to avoid a prolonged primary against HRC

If I felt Paul was genuine and believed what he was spouting, I’d agree with you.

A broken clock is right twice a day. That still doesn’t mean it’s not broken.

Rand may not get the big money.
But he certainly can skim from the early caucuses without much consternation.
There’s a profit there. Or Rand wouldn’t be trying.
He’s seen his father do the same thing.

It’s Etch-A-Sketching-for-Dollars on a smaller scale.

You are going to be more confused. He had at one time sold loosies which for some obscure reason is a crime there. Offering to buy a couple of cigarettes is a polite way to get a nicotine fix without coughing up the price of a pack or bumming the smokes. Poor people do it and rich people do not, so there you have justification for the law. The tax gets charged each time the product is sold. Tax collectors have a long and thoroughly earned history of regressive parasitic behavior like this. My guess is that they could also arrest all the people who open a pack of smokes without tearing the tax stamp seal so that it can not be reused to avoid the tax. At any rate pandering Kools is not what the cops decided to bust him for, and this is just part of the standard PD press release intended to further incriminate the person in the eyes of the general public and potential jurors.
The real question here is why the cop decided to kill him instead of arresting him.
