Discussion: Rand Paul, Enemy Of Socialized Medicine, Will Go To Canada For Surgery

Yeah they have that place near Toronto that is like a hernia surgery factory with enslaved-surgeons who are chained to the floors of the operating theatres for back to back procedures all day

What procedure is Rand having done in Canada? Is he going there because insurance in this country won’t pay for it?

Very true. But, and this is only based on my familiarity with state university systems here in the US, it’s possible the overseas full pay patients are welcomed because by paying premium amounts, they help subsidize the system. Like overseas F1 students who pay premium rates help subsidize state universities. BTW this is often controversal for competitive systems, like the UCal system, where overseas students might bump out in-state students.

And apparently one way he maintained it was by shooting his grass clipping onto his neighbor’s lawn, and purposely stinking up their yard, and generally being an ass.

His hero Ayn Rand seemed to like her Medicare.

Yeah, but he could legally get medical marijuana in plenty of places here. Of course he might be breaking Federal law, I seriously haven’t kept up with what’s going on on that front.

If there is an insurance claim involved, I think not. Basically if he want the neighbor (or neighbor’s insurance) to pay, he has to give them access. I’m not sure at this point if he can just say, eh, never mind, and have his own insurance pay without them insisting on going after the neighbor’s.

Formed his own board? That would be fitting.

My husband had hernia surgery in So Cal a few years ago. Same day surgery. In the way home we stopped for a coffee and snack. The next evening we walked to a neighbor’s house for a party. A routine surgery. There must be more to this story.

This goes more to his perception of the quality of health care in Canada vs. the US rather than to his disdain for socialized medicine (I’m assuming he, his insurance or civil settlement funds will be paying for his surgery in Canada).

I’m not sure what Paul has said in the past about the quality of medical care in Canada, but certainly the right has this general meme that medical care in Canada is compromised (it’s not) because it is “socialistic”.

This would seem to be a clear acknowledgement that the quality of health care in Canada is equal to or exceeds that in the US (which of course is true) and that by itself is a repudiation of one of the major issues raised about the single-payer system in Canada.

I rather wonder why he couldn’t find an adequate surgeon in the US, though.

Forgot about that aspect of it. I thought that whole thing was over. But yeah you’re right.

Canada is much more forgiving of those with addictions.

May his flight be cancelled due to inadequate airport staffing.

I had mine done (a double) last year at a good local hospital, and it was incredibly routine. I was up and around the next day.i think I went grocery shopping even.

Same here. I would be happy to recommend the Kaiser doctor who did my hernia operation in SoCal. Plus he’s black, so Sen. Paul could lecture him about Black Lives Matter.

Some of y’all have had easy and lucky ones… After mine, I definitely wasn’t wandering around going grocery shopping or chatting up neighbors. I was shifting between bed and couch for like 3 days, took a couple weeks to be back to almost normal.

I think it’s still a concern for students, especially if they are planning on federal grants in the future (e.g. grad school) or federal aid in the present. Doesn’t matter what the local law is.

Very funny!!
