Rahm is a fool. Given the speed with which the City dropped the charges, is he sure he wants to cope with discovery?
That’s something his successor is well qualified to assess.
Don’t worry, this will all make sense when Smollet’s behaviour is retroactively criminalized with the new ‘Urban Police Pursuing the Investigation of Terrorism Y’all’ legislation, or UPPITY Act.
NPR just ran an article this week:
Simply because Mr. Smollet has more money than some people, it doesn’t change the injustice of trying to charge (financially) innocent people for the legal system, especially when they weren’t even charged (legally).
Good. This fraud should pay every penny.
So, how many billable hours will the city attorneys spend on this?
I don’t understand why the charges were dropped. I don’t care what color he is; if he faked this attack, there should be some consequences.
This isn’t how we punish people in our society. If he’s guilty, charge him and convict him. If you can’t convict him, he’s not responsible for these costs.
Smollett has never changed his story–some early details were reported and embellished by others. The CPD were releasing all kinds of details that likely would have tainted a jury pool, and prosecutors were no better. The story was weird and fishy, but if he was guilty the city f’ed up and needs to suck it up. People are presumed innocent until proven guilty–and while Smollett may be guilty in the public’s eye, he was not convicted and charges were dropped. City officials need to offer concrete proof–not righteous indignation and allegations–about why they still want money from Smollett.
Maybe he hopes smollett’s fees will offset the billions he left the city taxpayers on hook for with Lincoln Yards plan they hurriedly approved?
Smollet tried to pull a publicity stunt. Didn’t work when it was investigated. It required $130+K in police time that was taken away from other duties.
It was a publicity stunt. He should pay for it.
“Literally unhinged” would mean that he is not physically attached to hinges.
I believe that would be the normal state for a human being.
And how much would you bill the orange faker in the White House?
One has to admire his commitment, if nothing else. He has stuck to his utterly implausible narrative, in the face of all rationality.
