Discussion: Prospect Of Native Congresswoman Galvanizes American Indians

If she does not get elected, it will be a travesty.

She should be the favorite, but I think we should all send her a donation. She needs to win. In the world dominated by Scott Pruitt and Ryan Zinke we need her wisdom and perspective in Congress.

Any bets on if Trump will ask if she is related to Senator Warren?

So happy! I am old enough to remember when non-white, non-christian, non-straight non-men were never considered for Congress (the handful of women in that body were widows of electeds or considered freaks and ignored), and now I am starting to think I might actually live to see the day when Native American candidates and electeds are common.

We’re all real excited here about her being our candidate, and the district is pretty safe D so she’s heavily favored to win the seat. She’s a good woman who has worked hard for her people and for the D party here for years.

Sad that the R opponent went right into the typical Reactionary smack-talking points. She implies that people have won seats based solely on non-white identities, which is bullshit, anyone who has ever run partly on appeals to make legislatures look more like the country at large has also brought serious chops as organisers, social workers, public attorneys, etc. They actually have to be better qualified than Anglo candidates, who can claim they are entitled to the job by virtue of skin color, and that’s clearly what Arnold-Jones is implying here.

And she asks what good electing people of color has ever done, when it’s obvious it has made the government more representative of the population of a highly diverse country. It’s particularly shameful when a New Mexican says such a stupid thing, you can’t be part of this most diverse state and deny the richness of the culture, unless of course you’re just some racist cracker who thinks Anglos have the sole right to rule, which, once again, is what Arnold-Jones is implying here.

It’ll be gratifying to see Arnold-Jones slink off with her tail between her legs on election night if that’s the way she wants to campaign. It’ll be gratifying to see another barrier fall down when we send the first Indian woman to Congress, too. And we will probably set another milestone in electing the first D Latina as governor, following the first-ever R Latina gov. in history.

The less we talk about what trumpp will say on any given subject the better off we’ll be. He spews poison every time that little pursed mouth opens

It’s gratifying that women and particular women of color are grabbing their seats at the table. The vote hasn’t been finalized, but we in San Francisco are on the verge of getting our first black woman as mayor, a woman who really did work her way to the top from very, very humble beginnings. The only other woman who has served as mayor was Dianne Feinstein in the 70’s. So it’s time.
