I think that’s how it’s supposed to work. If a crime is believed to be committed, law enforcement investigates.
They are just trying to slow down the prosecution and buy time. There was no doubt that Mueller had complete authority to investigate the specific matters covered by Manafort’s indictments…and much, much more. But, being a Special Counsel, they had to at least make the effort of this motion, even though everyone knew it was going to be denied.

Mueller has assembled an all-star cast of prosecutors. Manafort can empty his coffers on his legal team, and it won’t help because he’s dirty as sin, and has certainly left proof of his corruption in bank records and email chains that he never thought would be investigated.
Even if tRump pardons him, he’ll do long time on state charges. That, or he’ll be assassinated. That’s the risk when you screw around with organized crime.
So I guess it boils down to …

I read it last night and it blew my mind for a moment.
Rosenstein wrote that memo on August 2, 2017. For him to explicitly mention Manafort by name as being suspected of colluding with Russian gov’t officials to interfere in the 2016 election strongly suggests that there was significant evidence against Manafort in place already from Comey’s investigation. The FISA warrant they had on him and Page revealed a lot, apparently. But more than that, this was the former Campaign Manager. If he’s involved with the Russians it makes indicting the campaign a pretty easy bridge to cross. But wait…Mueller already has Flynn, Gates and Papado, 3 campaign members, tagged for conspiring with Russians. On top of that, we have Carter Page, a walking, talking catalog of treason who has not yet been indicted, but has been a treasure trove of information through the FISA warrant. In addition, we have the story of Alex Van der Zwaan who is being sentenced today for working with Trumpers who conspired with Russians. The strong implication is that Van der Zwaan was trying to cover up the link between Gates/Manafort and Russian intel (Kilimnick) and may have been an intermediary about the election conspiracy, not just about covering up their collective involvement in the politically motivated trial and imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko.
I dare say that there would appear to be more than enough evidence for Mueller to indict the Trump campaign entity for violations of the federal election campaign act. It also likely extends to violations of the computer fraud and abuse act and related crimes of concealment.

The revelation came in the Mueller team’s response to Manafort’s push to dismiss the Washington, D.C. indictment brought against him by arguing that Mueller did not have the power to investigate his work lobbying for Ukrainian officials.
None of which results in Trump being impeached and convicted at the Senate trial phase. Not by this Congress, nor a Congress that flips heavily to the Dem side. 67 Senators are not voting to remove Trump from office, since in the best case scenario about a dozen Republicans, post midterms. would have to join Dems in the effort. My prediction in a Senate impeachment trial: Zero GOP Senators vote to convict. Regardless the crimes or the concrete evidence of their commission.

You are correct, Democrats would not only have to wrangle sufficient GOP votes, but deal with defections in their own ranks. Manchin and Heitkamp are Dems in name only. Joe Donnelly has to run again in 2020 in the State of Northern Kentucky, so he’s vulnerable. Jon Tester is another unknown. Anyone clinging to impeachment ridding us of Trump needs to seriously recalibrate their hopes and expectations.
