“So called” because that is a rather informal and short-hand description of their nature that would not be immediately understood by most readers.
I just read a long explanation of a “put option” and I still have no idea what they do.
All options are pretty simple. Call options are a contract where someone agrees to let you buy something at an agreed price. Put options let you sell something. In exchange for that, the person who must satisfy the other side of that transaction gets some money.
If the price goes down, I can buy the stock for a cheaper price and sell it to you for the put option price. If the stock price goes up, there’s no value in the option. I do nothing, and you keep the money I gave you for the option.
