I noted yesterday that, after the Prosecution introduced clear evidence of fraudulent invoicing, Gates would be an ideal witness to confirm the pattern of fake invoicing that Manafort authorized and employed. Manafort (likely with Gates’ help) would create fake invoices appearing to come from legitimate US based 3rd party vendors (though there were some obvious spelling and syntax errors) to whom Manafort owed money and issued to Manafort’s offshore shell entities. Manafort would then have this entity pay this bill by sending money to a Manafort bank account. In this manner, Manafort transferred money housed in an offshore account into the US (and therefore laundered it). He then used that infusion of money from foreign based accounts to pay his legit US bills and if there was anything left over, he pocketed it, because there was now a ‘paper trail’ showing that the money was brought into the US as part of a legit looking business transaction.
When Gates testifies and confirms these fake transactions, it will further demonstrate how Manafort lied and willfully committed fraudulent acts to avoid paying taxes on income earned abroad and yet laundered such money into the US to pay for a lavish lifestyle.

It will also reveal the laundering process in the very remote case there are other such processes involving other criminals. In the remote case, that is.
What’s somewhat humorous is that one incriminating factor against Manafort is that he asked for help from Gates to convert documents back and forth from Word to pdf (and they apparently botched some of their attempts).
I thought this was just a head fake to give the defense attorneys a sleepless night. I mean, what do you do after you tell the jury the Evil Gates is the linchpin of the case and then the prosecution doesn’t even use him?

The idea of the lawyers for a breathtakingly corrupt, dishonest man basing their defense of him on discrediting the testimony of a man that Mueller obviously believes seems ludicrous to me. Mueller must have massive collaborating evidence to have placed Gates’ testimony at the center of the prosecution.

What if, after the head fake, they call Gates but limit his Direct Examination to the incidents where Manafort asked Gates to convert documents from Word to PDF, to rebut the Defense Opening claim that Paul was just so busy and trusted Gates to do everything…everything…That could give them some sleepless nights too I suppose.

Money laundering sounds fairly benign—but when you consider the usual suspects as the sources of money laundering (illegal arms smuggling, sex trafficking, child porn, etc) it takes on a different flavor altogether.
Just think: it’s money so dirty that the likes of Wells Fargo, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, HSBC, and Deutche Bank won’t touch it. Well, maybe not Deutche Bank…
