Discussion for article #233078
Perhaps we can avoid these sorts of problems by simply having Uncle Sam issue a firearm to every man, woman and child in the country. Everyone will have one, so then we won’t have to argue over who should have them. From there, we can address whatever problems ensue, and I’m sure there won’t be any, because guns always make everything better.
I know, it’s a big quote-
— It would expand background checks to private sales, with an exemption for sales between family members. If one neighbor wants to sell a gun to another, they must approach a federally-licensed firearms dealer, who would run an electronic ackground check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
— It would make it a violation of state law as well as federal law for convicted felons to possess firearms. This would give state and local police new power to enforce the law.
— It would require that anyone found by a court to have a mental disorder making him or her a danger to self or others, or who had been found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity, or who had been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility, to have that information forwarded to the federal background check database for exclusion from being allowed to buy a gun.
Only in America would people be against keeping weapons out of the hands of felons and people found by a court to be a danger to himself or others. “Liberals?” I don’t think so.
Vermont may have a bit more nuance than you’re used to.
I suspect the opposition is mostly due to the private sales clause, not the felon or mental disorder clauses. That said, the problem in Vermont is not Vermonters, but that folks from states with more restrictive gun laws can get guns in Vermont rather easily.
One of the most liberal states in the country also is one of the most passionate about defending the right to bear arms, a fact that is coming to the fore following proposed legislation to expand background checks and add other gun regulations.
Hundreds of Vermont residents are expected to pack the state House chamber for a public hearing…
Wow, “hundreds” of people. That certainly sounds like a mass uprising, and since “liberal” Vermont doesn’t have teabaggers, and certainly not “hundreds” of them, these people must be “liberals”. So, was this article written by the NRA or just cleared by their PR department before going out?
