I am pretty confident the last line is supposed to say it is a heavily Democratic-leaning Boston district.
The old guard is having a hard time holding on. Congress is going to be an interesting place in 2019. Not nearly as male or white.
Progressive wins in New York and Boston not too surprising. Don’t think I’d bet the house on this being writ large.
I am not so sure. “The times they are a-changin’.”
One thing is for sure regular people left and right are sick of the same old, same old. I think Democrats really, really want a congress that will work for them and not the money people.
That’s fine, but red ass Kansas sends far right candidates cuz they can.
We disarm ourselves when we dont do the same in places like NY and Boston.
i wonder if Lieberman will write something nice for Capuano.
And the closer we get to the election the more the base gets excited.
This hurts incumbents, helps progressives.
Also starts to show us what the November electorate will look like
Gillum has a narrow lead in Florida. I wouldn’t bet against him. He is impressive and he is exciting the base in ways the other Democrats in the primary could only dream about.
Maybe the Speaker will give the new people decent committee assignments. Death to seniority.
You know there is a way to do this without being generally obnoxious.
Her campaign refrain: “The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power.”
Unlike the GOP refrain: “The people closest to the pain should shut up, sit down, and stop being uppity.”
Bad choice of words but in the absence of term limits seniority has to be really modified. Did you see the age of those Senators today? Leahy said he voted on 16 nominations or so. And Grassley almost as many… This country has plenty of talent.
A change is gonna change in 63 days!
I agree it’s out of hand but we have young Democrats in Congress now and we’ll get more and the whole process will be organic - our leaders are not hell bent on holding onto power like theirs are - they’ll step back for the right younger people.
Term limits are never going to happen because you’re asking them to vote themselves out of a job and they won’t do it I don’t think. But it’s already apparent that Democrats like Booker and harris, and Swalwell and Heinrich are stepping up more and more so it is happening naturally.
Well Massachusetts just lost the head of the Transportation Committee (Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials) if the house turns Blue. And for what? The same votes we would get with Mike Capuano. Sorry, but seniority and experience mean something in the real world, and Congress won’t be any better with Pressley. We should be using our energy and resources to get rid of the corrupt GOP instead of cannibalizing our own party.
Capuano is one of the most liberal members of the House and has represented his district well for 20 years. There is virtually no daylight between his positions and Pressley but for abolish ICE. The district will be well-represented by Pressley, but the story is that a talented young black female liberal establishment candidate beat a talented old white male liberal establishment candidate.
Moulton over Tierney was more a case of a talented young white male beating a mediocre old white male. That seat was in real danger of turning red, I am thankful that Moulton won and it is solidly blue for the foreseeable future.
I prefer the direct democracy embodied in elections rather than the artificial and undemocratic term limits.
Surprise here is the margin. This was a race that had a decent amount of polling. None had Pressley ahead. She is going to win by 19 points.
“Republicans didn’t run a candidate in the heavily Republican Boston-based district, and Pressley is all but guaranteed to join the next Congress.”
Could I earmark my prime membership to help pay for a copy editor? This sort of thing happens a lot.
