Discussion for article #227589
The “ownership” of the Packers by fans is in name only. It’s another way to raise money by giving little rewards, like “stock certificates” that are worthless, but a nice souvenir. The Packers have been funded by taxpayers, both locally and statewide, so there’s little choice. You pay whether you are an “owner” or not. As the only game in town they have a fanatic loyalty from their fans, which is nice for them. There’s nothing that different or special from the rest of NFL teams in the way they are governed or run, however. Cute idea though.
From the Packers website:
The 2003 redevelopment, a $295 million project, was completed on time – and on budget – with the Packers remaining in Green Bay to play all of their games throughout the 32-month process. Put into motion by a county-wide referendum that approved a half-cent sales tax increase on Sept. 12, 2000, the project was financed jointly by the city of Green Bay, county taxpayers, the Packers and the NFL.
