Discussion: Princeton To Keep Woodrow Wilson's Name On School Despite Racist Views

Speaking of names on schools:

A donor wants to give $30 million to George Mason University providing it name its law school after the late Fat Tony Scalia. Should this happen it would be called The Antonin Scalia School of Law or, for short, The ASSOL.

Slavery, Jim Crow, Mass Incarceration…ehh get over it. Amirite? oh yeah don’t look at the monuments that pay homage to those defenders of that peculiar institution either…just get over it…i tell ya these god damn coloreds demanding we recognize their humanity, respect their dignity, treat them as equals…it’s like they think their human and shit…Murica bitches!

Our nation has a racist past–from African Americans, to Native Americans, to the Irish, Italians, Chinese, Jewish, etc., etc., etc. Truth be told, pretty much everyone alive at our nations’ founding, as well, as a great number of our leaders of only 50 years ago, harbored views many would reject today. The answer cannot be to white-wash (probably a racial tone to that phrase, too), our history but to own up to it, admit our flaws, to teach our flaws and promise to do better.

Woodrow Wilson was the President. As you note, many of his views would not be acceptable today. My own father would occasionally say something like “jew him down” (bargain with someone). The term I have heard is “presentism”: Applying the standards of today to the behavior and statements of the past. I agree with Princeton: Stick with “Woodrow Wilson School”. Wilson was for the League of Nations, a laudable and prophetic idea that unfortunately did not stop WWII.

Hell, if they can only name buildings after historic people that weren’t racist they’ll be down to about 2 names, if that. Let’s face it, white people got to the top of the heap by keeping others down, sad as that may be to admit.
