Priebus repeatedly referred to the problems political professionals have had assessing Trump’s candidacy, saying people have been “completely wrong about Donald Trump and the playbook.”
and this is where someone should have mentioned about those debates often resembling a Ted Mack amateur hour episode that was directed by Dali, but no worries.

I’m reminded (at least in part) of the story of the distinguished actor being interviewed just previous to his final performance before retiring.
“To what do you attribute your outstanding success?”
The actor pondered the question for a few moments, then replied,
"I would have to say that what was most responsible for my career was sincerity. Yes, sincerity was clearly the key to my success as an actor.
If you can fake that, you can do anything."
Where the comparison to Mr. Trump breaks down is in the distinguished part.

There just isn’t anything like suggesting that the country default on its bonds/debts to make a man look presidential, is there? That’s not trying, Priebus. That’s failing. You conservatives just don’t seem to know how to do anything right any longer.

I know I should not laugh at people who can’t help themselves. But this, right here, is harder to stop. “Trying very hard to be presidential.” Reince, he either has it or he doesn’t. One of my grandmothers was known to say…“You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” That is where we are right now Reince…silk purse/sow’s ear.
Aside from being a sociopath, he’s as phony as a $3.00 bill. No amount of spin is going to change what this man is…a carnival huckster who is working the midway from dusk to dawn. Pulling in the rubes who are all wide eyed with wonder at all they are seeing and hearing. He’s in essence trying to improve on what Barnum and Bailey offered the general public…a good time under the big top. Not working. Those guys were pros. Trump is a rank amateur. But you keep on spinning it Reince baby. You’ve got to convince yourself some kind of way, to keep from jumping off the roof top.

But Reince said Trump’s trying to be less sociopathic or as Borowitz put it “less Hitlerish” by claiming his pathological lies and instigations of followers to “have protestors carried out on stretchers” were merely “suggestions.”
He should try first being human. Baby steps.

Priebus also said he didn’t know what to make of a report in The Washington Post that Trump posed as his own spokesman more than two decades ago in phone conversations with reporters in which he provided details about the New York businessman’s personal relationships.
“…I don’t know what to tell you,”
That is about as close as we are ever going to get to Preibus admitting “Yeah, everything I was just saying is complete bullshit, you caught me. I got nothing”
