Discussion: Prez Peña Nieto: Trump's Comments Are Hurting US-Mexico Relations

Discussion for article #247008

This will just make Drumpf even more popular with the xenophobes.

I’m trying to figure out how Trump gets Mexico to pay up on any receipt.

I must be missing something.

The wall just got another ten feet taller.

“It appears to me that (Trump’s comments) hurt the relationship we have sought with the United States.”

I will grant what Trump has said is deeply offensive to Mexicans. But let’s not forget, he still has no official position in the US government. President Obama is still the man in charge and, as such, there really shouldn’t be a deterioration in the relationship. Now if Trump somehow gets elected…

I applaud his desire to maintain relations should Drumpf become president, but he’s missing one key element.

In the interview with Excelsior, Peña Nieto said he would work with whoever eventually wins this year’s U.S. presidential election and to maintain a climate “of mutual respect and joint agreements.”

Drumpf isn’t going to have an attitude of “mutual respect”…so his efforts will be to naught.

I agree, but it’s hard to overlook all the noise he’s making, the people who seem to agree with him, and the coverage the media is giving him. This guy is right to be concerned, even if he doesn’t win in November. There is a lot of animosity being built up, and that’s not going away easily, regardless of the election outcome.

One proposal of his I have read involves adding charges to Mexican entry fees to the U.S.

Another is trying to force them to pay for it by gutting trade deals or imposing tariffs that would harm Mexico enough that it would give in.

Realistic? No, but highly popular with his followers, who believe he will do it, just as he will deal with any other countries that he disagrees with by punching their leaders in the face (to use a favorite term of his.)

which means he will be backpedaling off of both in the future…
