Once we’re past the shock of getting used to the idea that a mountain formerly called Denali and currently called Denali will, going forward, be called Denali, I have another idea. Which is that it’s about time we name something for Charlie Parker. My suggestion is that New York City be called Birdville. Always seemed stupid to say New York, New York, like a mynah bird or something. I’m open to other ideas but I think I’m on to something here.

ETA: I’m a little bit kidding about renaming NYC but I’m not at all kidding about how it’s time for some very serious Bird recognition. He’s one of the greatest musical artists and innovators the world has ever seen, and serious music lovers in other countries are far more aware of it than we are. It’s like if most Austrians had never heard of some guy named Mozart. It’s just wrong.

Or the Reagan freeway in California…it runs to the Museum of National Bankruptcy.

This means that Republicans who previously and vigorously supported the name change to “Denali” will now be sputtering in outrage that the Muslim, socialist, atheist president is trying to destroy an ancient American tradition.

It will appear on Tuesday. Wednesday at the latest. Louise Gohmert and Derrell Issa will be co-sponsors.

They wanted to change the call sign from Washington to the name of that piece of shit failed lifeguard.

Pilots and controllers refused to use it.

The bill to rename the airport also included taking the name of that America-hating fascist Hoover off the FBI building. It was a compromise. That law has never been enforced.

Can only wonder why—America-hate, I suppose.

Not so sure. Other than part of one state freeway running through the San Fernando Valley out to his presidential library, and the big State of California office building in downtown L.A., I can’t think of anything major named after Reagan (no doubt there are some neighborhood streets and schools named for him). Attempts to have a Reagan specialty license plate issued failed to get enough signatures to make the cut. In terms of raw number of “things” named for them, I would bet California has more things named for Cesar Chavez than Reagan (though my impression may slanted by not living in Orange County).

Even if they’d been struggling for decades for a name change, they’d automatically be against it because Obama.

It’s how they roll on their square wheels.

This is definitely relevant, now:

This Wiki link lays out how much is named after the saint here, including “institutions”, “schools”, and “roads”, over a dozen. Wiki also tells me that there are just six named after Chavez in California, including one which is a major artery here in San Francisco, but many more than the saint in the rest of the country.

Did you listen to the 4 day Young/Parker birthday broadcast on wkcr?

At last. Mountaineers have been calling it Denali for years.

Tell ya what, I’ve looked forward to something on this scale from Obama for some time. I was sure he was capable of this. It has feeling, understanding of local native culture and subtlety of a kind that really pisses off folk like McConnell. Like shiv in the ribs. I applaud the President!!
Booyah!!

Cue the Obama haters criticizing the president while not knowing that Denali is the original native Athabascan name of the mountain.

  • “Today Obama renamed a mountain. Tomorrow he may send white people to death camps. Yes, death camps. When will America rise to stop this man?”
    Walker

  • “I oppose Obama’s renaming of Mt. McKinley to Denali. America’s highest mountain should not be named after a foreigner.”
    Cruz

  • When I am president I’ll UNDO Obama’s name changing of that mountain, and like make THE MEXICANS pay for it!!"
    Trump

If I was Obama, I’d issue an executive order in my last week in office re-naming Mt. Rushmore to:

BARACK HUSSEIN FROM KENYA MOUNTAIN

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just sayin'
