Discussion for article #227728
Having lived my entire life in Missouri, in the KC area, I am both shocked and pleasantly surprised that the conservative Kansas has seen what the tea party has done to the Republican party. Here is the home of Koch Industries, and yet little known is the fact that their Republican legislature has time and time again fought the Kochs back, when they have tried to overturn a state law that says that a certain percentage of their power has to come from renewable energy sources. Kansas has a lot of wind turbine energy, and the Republican legislators in those districts are not about to allow the high and mighty Kochs to destroy a big part of their district’s jobs and economy.
Kansans may be conservatives, but they are not extremists, and both Roberts and Brownback have been doing the bidding of the tea party extremists, backed by the mighty Kochs. Although I doubt that they want to be seen as the saviors of the Dems keeping the Senate, I do believe that not only will Roberts lose, but also Brownback, and now even their Sec. of State Kobach is in some trouble. He is the same Kobach responsible for Arizona’s horrible SB 1070 bill, and is the one trying to forbid Taylor from having his name from being taken off the ballot for Senate. I believe that he just might lose his reelection bid also.
Now, if only the idiots in my own state of Missouri, that used to be a very moderate state, would wake up to all of the damage the tea party extremists in our legislature has done, and throw those bums to the curb too.
Well I am not going to count my chickens but it would be a sweet treat if Roberts lost and it resulted in the Democrats holding the Senate.
Great insight, but I have one question. Those sane KS Conservatives went to the polls and supported Brownback’s purge of moderate Republicans the last go round. And, rightly so, Brownback/Kobach took that as a mandate to go T’bagger extreme.
The T’bagger lege is there because of your supposed moderate KS base.
The bottom line is still the same…there is something going on in Kansas and whatever it is, it isn’t friendly to Brownback and Roberts. You knew something was up when over 100 prominent state republicans signed an endorsement of Davis over Brownback. Including republicans in the legislature.
Stormin’ Orman.
Anti-incumbency is running strong in Kansas thanks to Brownback on the state level and Roberts in the Senate (due to his Virginia residency and vote AGAINST the farm bill). Wonder if it will actually take down Huelskamp in the First District as well? Will they keep a congressman who got kicked off the Ag committee by his own Republicans?
Let’s not forget that the people of Kansas elected a female Democrat (Sebelius) for two terms as governor, the second time I believe with almost 70% of the vote. As you say Kansas has some crazies too, but most states do.
This is a very good sign. Some moderate conservatives will not vote for someone with a “D” next to their name, but will vote for a person with an “I” who may have the exact same political positions. I think this is an excellent strategy, especially since I’m no huge fan of many Dems, they are just a much better alternative. I’ll take left leaning centrist Independents anytime over a radical Dem. Plus the odds of them beating a Republican are much better.
Hey, whatever works…
Due to likely ground game deficits on Orman’s team, I’m guessing he’ll need to keep a pretty good “polling lead” to squeak out a tight race. That ground game lead is not due to anything other than the national R campaigners flocking to town - Orman has clearly done a KILLER job on this campaign so far, I just hope his ground game can keep pace.
Like the other poster, I’ll take a moderate over a far right OR far left Senator every time. The middle is horribly under-represented.
It’s not what they’ve done to the party, it’s the damage they’ve done to your state.
Another attempt by liberals to distract from BENGHAZI!!!1
That is true, but Brownback did not run on bankrupting the state either. There are several teabag Governors that won in 2010 in huge trouble this year, and that is because they got way to extreme for those that do not like extremes. Roberts was not an extremist, until like in other red states, he had to become one to win his primary, because he knew the Kochs would be pouring money into his challenger.
We had so called moderate Republicans here in Missouri begging the few moderates on the right left in our legislature, not to vote to override our Governor’s veto of the ridiculous anti-women bill that mandated a three day waiting period before they could get an abortion, and these were Republicans who fuel their campaigns with lot’s of money, but they were told that although they hated voting to override that veto, they had to in order to keep their jobs. Sooner or later, that will come back to haunt them here in Missouri too, just as it is in Kansas. If the moderate Republicans still left in Kansas did not realize the huge mistake they made in 2010, then why are so many of them endorsing the Independent, when they have to be reelected too?
EXACTLY! I do have some hope still left as a Missourian though, as we did defeat Aikin the last time around.
The DSCC are behind Orman and will use their ground game to get out the vote for him. It is said that my Senator, Sen McCaskill played a huge role in getting the Dem candidate to back out of the campaign so Orman could win, because they already knew how he was polling against Roberts. The moderate Republicans who turned against both Brownback and Roberts, and who had endorsed the Dem candidate, are now endorsing Orman in the Senate race.
