Discussion: Powerful GOP Rep. Lamar Smith Announces Retirement

This is why they say be careful what you wish for. Like the pivot that never came.

I can’t speak for Lamar Smith’s district but Hensarling’s seat has been crying out for a Democrat for a long time now - about 11 years. And I think Phil Sessions will be replaced as well with a Democrat and a woman Democrat.

Lots of great news today. This is my much reviled Rep. He was getting heat from constituents that he wasn’t used to getting. He found himself having to defend his views and stances in LTE’s in very conservative newspapers. We may not prevail, depending on who wins the primary, but I do know that local Rethugs are running scared, as the opposition has never been so vocal and visible.

90% of Puerto Rico was deforested and its coral reefs destroyed before Maria struck. You cannot put greed ahead of resilience and then complain when the system collapses. Sadly, many people had been fighting to save forests, protect groundwater and save reefs for decades.

And the Big Energy Lobby loses another valued employee. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, loser.

Especially Lloyd Doggett’s district. O my god. A half a block wide and it runs almost to the border.

And they still couldn’t get rid of him.

I worked on his Senate campaign in 1982? I think it was, maybe '84. He didn’t win but I got to know him a bit. He’s quiet. So I didn’t get to know him very well, but I have always loved him.

Woohoo! This a-hole’s my congressman, due to redistricting designed to nullify votes from liberals in Austin by watering them down with conservatives throughout the state. Not that I have the highest hopes that my vote will mean squat on election day, but it’s at least nice to know my vote might mean something.

It truly is shameful that politicians are allowed to pick their constituents when it’s meant to be the other way around. No taxation without representation, indeed. I haven’t had anyone properly represent my area on the federal level in years.

It’s not just Puerto Rico: 6 other Caribbean island nations are in crisis after the hurricanes

Barbuda’s 1,600 inhabitants were forced to abandon the island after Hurricane Irma hit: It’s not an overstatement to say that Hurricane Irma annihilated Barbuda, the Caribbean island with 1,600 inhabitants that forms a country along with Antigua southeast of Puerto Rico. ā€œThe damage is complete,ā€ Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador Ronald Sanders told Public Radio International, shortly after the storm. Some 95 percent of the islands homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by Irma, prompting islanders to flee.

ā€œFor the first time in 300 years,ā€ Sanders said, ā€œthere’s not a single living person on the island of Barbuda — a civilization that has existed on that island for over 300 years has now been extinguished.ā€

On September 29, a full 24 days after Irma struck, Barbuda’s evacuation order was finally lifted. But a recent account from the Washington Post reported that the island had ā€œgone feralā€ and that locals weren’t flocking back:

Abandoned dogs had formed packs and were taking down livestock. From the hospital courtyard, Cuffy could smell death — animal carcasses rotting in the rubble. A corner of the roof had collapsed, the windows blown in. The medical dorms were a scrap heap. An ambulance was wedged into a tree.

The thing that absolutely riles me up is how they go on and on and on about ā€œjunk scienceā€ of global warming. Scientists are in the pocket of George Soros or some cockamamie explanation.

Yet one paper which shows that one locale has been cooler over some time span, and damn they are all over that report as proving climate change is a hoax. Even when the paper itself says explicitly this is not a contradiction of AGW, they’ll seize on that one tidbit and declare victory.

The youtuber with the unlikely name of potholer54 does fantastic exposes on this phenomenon. He is actually a professional journalist, and does this debunking in his spare time. He will take one of their claims, track it through the echo chamber back to the source paper, then show in black and white how they have misunderstood or lied about what the paper actually says.

Cowardly fear of being forced to do the right thing. Best explanation yet for the rain of craven retirements.

He is one of the Representatives that gives the Republican party the reputation as the party of ignorance. Of course, he did not get there by himself, he needed a district willing to abide ignorance. So as much as I hail his departure, I will await cheering until we see what happens.

Congrats! I found out yesterday that mine - Jeb Hensarling - is retiring too! Let’s put Democrats in those seats!

My rep is Don Young. I am not sure if that lunatic will ever retire, he is more likely to be charged with assault.
