Because someone, somewhere, might actually be enjoying themselves and Jeebus doesn’t like that.

This newly discovered love of BDSM by women is nothing but marketing hype to sell women stuff, specifially poorly written “romance” novels. BDSM is the new Danielle Steele.

But I’m sure that there were more than a few women who thought they had to try BDSM because it was the “thing to do” that were comically shouting their safe word after the first slap of the paddle…

What about furries? Pony play?

I have to ask: in the age of the Kindle, why do Rubenesque, middle-aged women read “50 Shades of Gray” in hardcover or paperback, on the train, in full view of everyone trying very hard not to imagine them naked, let alone having cirque du soleil sex?

What the hell is MY safe word and how do I get these gals to stop?

Does this mean having a stripper pole in the basement is now passé?

What about them, eustace? Is there something you’d like to tell us? If so, please don’t–THANKS!

We are safe, for now.

As someone who engages in the BDSM lifestyle, I find the entire thing a bizarre sideshow. On one hand, an atrociously written series of novels created a sensation at the same moment it presented a distorted view of my kink. Most egregious was the fact that the cardboard protagonists were both broken people who could only be cured by rejecting their kink (or diminishing its scope). On the other hand, you have people who are frightened of sexuality, especially sexuality that is 100% controlled by the participants no matter it’s oddness.

Sex is scary to some people. I tend to think that it’s scariest to people who are jealous they aren’t getting any. As a man in his early 50s with a wife I met in the scene, a lover who is part of our poly family, and a woman 20 years my junior I’m also attached to, I’m living a pretty good life. I think that’s why so many people are annoyed. How dare I have a good time?!?

Simple explanation…

They do not want to be found out…

Revenge porn is now illegal in Illinois. What have we come to as a nation?

Going out on a limb here about the books, not the laws… I think it’s more old school, like a Erica Jong Fear of Flying thing. Not all of these women want BDSM (not talking the real practioneers, I’m talking the housewives AustinDave sees on the train) they want a man to be enthralled with them and to be responsible for everything that follows. As a fantasy. No guilt, no worries about the consequences.

Most people don’t really want a manipulative stalker, a guy that tells you who you can see, what you can eat, when you can talk to your friends, etc. (Again, not real BDSM, just idiotic books like 50 Shades)

I think that’s why paranormal romances are popular. Today, the thought of a controlling “alpha” has less appeal to most women, no matter the age. When you swap it out and he’s an ancient vampire with older values, or a werewolf who’s animal side is controlling things, then it’s okay, you can excuse the bad behavior in your head because he’s not human. You can even get rid of the whole worries about disease and protection thing in these stories, too. Because condoms and birth control again are no fun, they are the woman’s responsibility. The books offer Jong’s “Zipless” way.

What is England coming to? First they outlawed fox hunting, and now they’ve outlawed caning (at least in pornography). There goes the old stereotype of the stodgy upper level English civil servant heading off after work to get his bum caned. At least they still have austerity for those who like BDSM.
