Discussion: Pope Francis Will Visit America

Discussion for article #230223

“…Francis is expected to address Congress…”

Oops, sorry.

Just checked the calendar, and Congress will be on vacation that month.

Why does this matter?

Hope he brought his popemobile. I love the guy. American cardinals, not so much.

So Obama and Francis, GOP public enemies # 1 and #2, will be in DC on the same day?

Maybe Francis could excommunicate those fucking Opus Dei pricks on the SCrOTUS while he’s there.

Hoping he visits somewhere near.
Not even Catholic, and I’d turn out.
Just to say: I saw this Pope.

The fluff piece last night on 60 Minutes, showed Bergoglio and his US pal as compassionate modern guys who are after the predatory class in their organization, which from PR view, would no longer be ignored. Look no further than Ireland where it is now against the law for clerics (male) to be alone with children.

Jorge was hand picked for the eventual promotion by the ex Zyklon B sales guy and Raztinger because of his affable persona which hopefully would staunch the attrition mostly in Latin countries of adherents being pirated away by more spontaneous Evangelical cults.

The marketing seems effective, and sure, anyone based in 21st century reality should acknowledge societal changes, or the need for changes as a leader and possibly effort to bring such changes along.

That being said, it might border on platitude, or it might serve the greater good depending on a particular pronouncement.

It was mumbles though during the interview when Nora O’Donnell asked O’Malley why women are still considered second class citizens by the Pope, and in background voice over pointed out that Bergoglio and O’Malley hew to the same archaic (idiocy) of (my words) middle age, perhaps even stone age less than modern thinking fostered by their sect.

When O’Malley waxed soft shoed about the founding of the church, he displayed a strictiist nihilism that typically ignores what Jesus actually imparted (awakened) to his students which as arcane as it may be is that Gnosis (Knowledge: Light, Sound, Holy Breath and Manna) was experienced as a discipline and the adherents of that knew immutable peace (heaven?) is within, not in some book, or enclave gathering place, nor could it be locked up in a golden box and be taken out then passed around only to be locked up again.

His understanding of the fact that indeed, the Christians who came before the formal church were ostracized and shunned by the likes of Paul may be a topic off camera in a discussion, though not likely.

So some contemporary marketing that is sincere but maintains the conservative status quo appears to be working and seems better to the flock and others not of flock, to be sure.

The caveat is that Bergoglio, as bishop of large SA population centers knows full well which person travels around the planet offering peace to individuals who seek understanding of the infinite and he also knows it is not himself. Whether of nobleness or false humility, he fails (so far) to acknowledge that.

That though, would cause the wheels to come off and relegate a couple thousand years of intellectual proprietary herding, as moot.

A better challenge for these two old guys would be to break with tradition fully and publicly acknowledge that they do not have the chops to reveal what man has called GOD to anyone, and to then let people become aware as individuals, that belief is not a substitute for understanding.

Continuing on as false prophets might be fashionable and PC in a sense of sect, but one must experience peace within while alive, that’s the way it has always been, that’s the way it works and arguably, leaves the ‘last judgment’ up to human beings as individuals.

Should O’Malley or Bergoglio ask Prem Rawat in for tea, that would be news.

It will be interesting to see the immediately televised Republican Party response to the Pope’s message of understanding and inclusion, helping the poor, sharing the wealth, and God’s fogiveness for our sins. Republicans confess no sins, and preach the exact opposite of what the Pope reveals as the Word of God. I can see Ted Cruz profess to believe in what the Pope says, but that that the Word of God cannot be practically established as the basis for law in the US, unless it is anti-gay, anti-abortion, and smiting your enemies. Helping the poor, forgiving the sins of those who have sinned against us, and turning the other cheek might be the Word of God, but that Word is un-American.

I realize that TPM is head over heals in love with the Pope. While his PR machine works overtime telling the world about showers and synods. There has been no real change in the Church. When civilian Catholics are brought into the power structure then there might be some progress. Until then the Popes in waiting are biding their time.
This trip to the US will cost millions. The dioceses will be expected to pick up the tab while the city of Philadelphia will pay the overtime costs of security in the hope that the trip will be good for business.
The Pope should put on a suit and fly coach and leave his entourage at home.

Why does the world’s most important religious leader visiting the world’s most powerful country matter?

Is that your question?

You don’t seem to be very up on recent developments from the Vatican. Pope Francis has been appointing lay - civilian? really? - Catholics to important positions. He’s included lay women in the body overseeing the response to the molestation crisis, just to give you one example.

“Pope Francis Will Visit America”

And RWNJ Teatroll religio-fascist conservative Christian nutjobs will ignore everything he says while he’s here.

They’re already going apeshit, calling him “false prophet” and “antichrist”.

He is holding onto a shrunken constituency, it may suit (one, some, you etc.) to say he is the most important religious leader which is acceptable to be sure, but as false prophets go, as with Jakes, Osteen and other ‘leaders’ he is one among many who are a dime a dozen.

TPM:

During his first visit to the U.S. as pope, Francis is expected to address Congress …

Looking forward to the dismayed faces and voices of outrage from Republican congress members during and after that speech.

I don’t think Pope Francis’s address will be particularly amenable to the GOP’s Afflict the Afflicted, Comfort the Comfortable worldview.

That’s kind of their default status these days…

All the while praising him for his leadership.

I hope Frank visits the Red states. It will be worth it to see Teabaggers shitting themselves in completely impotent rage.

Plus, the level of protest that Fox will gin up is likely to show the true ugliness of Tea.

The clergy were responsible for the scandal and one lay catholic appointed to the study group with a bunch of bishops is a gesture? Demand that they do better!

Me too. I like this guy a lot.
