Yes, Frankie, there ARE grounds for the comparison of same-sex marriage to opposite-sex marriage: the Obergefell v. Hodges decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26, 2015. Wow. I’m an agnostic (though I have a Catholic extended family) so I have no connection to the Church.
But I think the comments above are incredibly churlish. This is a remarkable document which attempts to reconcile the conservative “black and white” 5th century interpretation of the Gospels and 21st century realities of family life in the Americas and Europe.
The comments reflect an “all or nothing” approach to advancements that would make the conservative bishops smile. Sometimes real change takes time. Rejecting incremental changes – though this one is far from minor increments – and insisting on getting home NOW is consistent with how many of us approach our politics these days, but ultimately doomed to failure.
Are you talking about the Church eradicating the old religions 2000 years ago or correcting what they’ve left us with today?
