Discussion: Pope Francis: Priests Can Absolve Women Who Seek Forgiveness For Their Abortion

Discussion for article #239980

Studies show that the majority of women who have abortions feel no regret or “pain” so you’re talking about a minority of people who have been inflicted with guilt by your silly religion.

Ouch! That’s surely going to outrage the already outraged “it’s a baby, but only until it breathes on it’s own,” crowd!

Conservatives should shit a literal brick over this.

What’s all this FORGIVENESS crap? Jesus is WEEPING over all of this LIBRULIZZUM.

Francis is sending another signal to the bishops. Sure would be nice if they listened to him!

You already see the nuts on the Right denouncing the “Communist” Pope.

That’s the last nail in the coffin for the Christian Coalition. It’s about time someone pulled out of that hateful organization and started acting like a real Christian again.

Jesus would be proud that the spirit of the Lord was not entirely snuffed out by Satan and his conservative minions. Who knows, the young may start feeling that The Church is a sanctuary again and return after their parents and grandparents left in droves of disgust during the last few decades. .

Women who elect to exercise control over their own bodies and have an abortion have absolutely nothing to apologize for.

I for one wish Francis had adddressed the issue of"not for rape"not for incest" “not for the life of the mother” the Republican coven of mostly men at their last debate all supported that position. They are seeking a license to kill women,I will continue to denounce them for thier evil position!

I’m digging on this spiritual leader. Are you?

He’s quite the mensch.

Having to go to confession and ask for forgiveness is so outdated. If God is everywhere I think he or she can hear you anywhere. Also, if you are a woman and are having an abortion you have already decided what you are doing is right, so why would you need forgiveness??

“This a sharp departure from Catholic doctrine…”

It is? Since when? Lapsed Catholic I may be but I never heard there was one ‘special’ sin that could never be forgiven by a priest in confession. Heck, mafia members can be forgiven.

Women are stewards over their own bodies. Period. No pope or priest or pastor or bishop or imam all of whom are male, has the right to forgive or not when a woman makes ANY decision about her OWN body. Period.

Yes, I was told 50 years ago in catholic elementary school that you can murder ten people and be forgiven for it, and also the priest you are confessing to can’t tell. I think that has changed.

I don’t think it’s that simple. Many people decide to take a particular action at one time, and then later feel guilty about it, so even though they previously decided what they did was right doesn’t exclude any potential feelings of guilt. I agree with you that God can hear you anywhere, but some people feel the need to talk to someone, whether it be a psychologist, friend or priest.

“If Christ were here there is one thing he would not be—a Christian.”
― Mark Twain, Notebook

The Christian Coalition, the Christian Right or the Religious Right has never been Christian, nor has it ever been right about anything!
It’s run by modern-day grifters, who continually fleece the really dumb both young and old, out of their hard earned money!

I love this adorable man. I am a non-believer, but I love this man! The nuclear explosion of outrage from the right is going to be so entertaining!
