Why the hell would Japan – or any other country – believe anything said to them by Trump or any of his minions?
The whole world would be wise to doubt the veracity of the entire Trump administration (and, having seen America once elect a Trump, forever skeptical about America, its government, and its people).

I’m sure they don’t. There are likely better and more trusted relationships in the State Department further down the chain though. Japan is going to play pretend with the Trump administration just like everyone else, hoping that the United States will come to its collective mind soon - because the alternative is just too awful.
