Discussion: Polls Predict French President Macron's Party Will Secure Parliamentary Victory

Hate to say this, but we sorta need a party like this in the U.S. Dems’ brand isn’t working well enough.

This is just delightful.

a party like what? What’s the difference here that you see that you think the Democrats lack? That’s pretty vague for a complaint.

turnout stood at only 35 percent

interesting.

The way people are not turning out to vote, apparently because they don’t think it’s that important, we are going to end up losing the right to vote and I predict it will be sorely missed in every fucking country that loses it.

LePen won a seat in Parliament, unfortunately.

Oh, well. Her power has been greatly diminished.

“hotpotato” has been flagged and reported to mods. No need to over-do it.

ETA: Gone in one minute. Kudos, mods!

Big win predicted, so people didn’t bother?

Could also be the way the French conduct elections. Two consecutive Sundays for the Presidential election, followed by two consecutive Sundays for the Parliamentary elections.

Can you imagine the turnout here if people had to go to the polls four times within six weeks?

That’s really pretty brutal.

That is the course during all French elections. Not the occasional runoff. Every. Frikkin. Time.

Ask, a lot, the French do. hahahahaha

This is actually a pared down version of what I’ve read elsewhere about picking the Doges of Venice:

"New regulations for the elections
of the doge introduced in 1268 remained in force until the end of the
republic in 1797. Their object was to minimize as far as possible the
influence of individual great families, and this was effected by a
complex electoral machinery. Thirty members of the Great Council, chosen by lot,
were reduced by lot to nine; the nine chose forty and the forty were
reduced by lot to twelve, who chose twenty-five. The twenty-five were
reduced by lot to nine and the nine elected forty-five. Then the
forty-five were once more reduced by lot to eleven, and the eleven
finally chose the forty-one who actually elected the doge.[1]
None could be elected but by at least twenty-five votes out of
forty-one, nine votes out of eleven or twelve, or seven votes out of
nine electors.[3] A detailed description of this process, and the ceremonial procession that followed, is preserved in Martin Da Canale’s work Les Estoires de Venise

So much for Trounce jacking with the EU.

In fact, they are uniting against him for one of the all time classical backfires.

Just everybody remember. Trump is not a falling-down drunk despite the illustration, but a teetotaler who happens to be an utter moron with a really big mouth! I hope we get a chance to visit him in jail before too long and make our own assessments!
