As the GOP presidential field narrows, Trump will get virtually none of the support from people whose candidates drop out.

Trump stands a good chance of picking up some of Cruz’s voters, but with Citizen’s United allowing losing candidate’s to stay in the race long after their “sell by” date, and a field as big as this one, Trump could rack up big wins in the early states. By the time some candidates get to must-win states (FL for Jeb! and Rubio, for instance), the race could be effectively over because Trump would be sucking up all the oxygen, would be viewed as the likely nominee, and some folks who didn’t like or support Trump would get behind who they view as the winner.

Gosh, is it even possible that the overwhelming joint recognition of this by by Republicans, conservatives and wingnut is what’s fueling Trumpmania?

Chris Matthews has long theorized that if Republicans decide they can’t beat Clinton, that they’re going to lose no matter who they run, they’ll decide to run the a bomb-thrower who’ll say the ugly stuff they wish they could say.

I’m worried about Walker. If Trump succeeds, as it appears likely he will, in obliterating Jeb!'s chances, then when Trump bails, the base will go to Cruz or Walker.

Jeb! seems to be consistently maintaining second or third place. He’s certainly doing no worse than Walker. Also, if Trump maintains his lead I don’t know why he’d be the one to bail before Cruz, but if he did I think he’s very likely to hand his voters to Cruz and to do so in a series of over the top endorsements as well as campaign for him. Trump is going to have a tremendous amount of sway with his voters, and he’s going to want to make certain he can hand his voters off to the eventual nominee, so that he can claim some sort of victory.

The funny thing is that Trump’s treatment of Megyn Kelly is not only no different from his treatment of everyone else (male and female, for Pete’s sake!), but actually masks a rather pro-woman stance on a policy level. He’s against de-funding Planned Parenthood, for example (though he wants to de-fund the abortion part, which is non-existent), and he’s pro-choice and pro-universal health care. Not that I want to advertise that because it risks undermining his popularity and I want him to be as popular as possible for as long as possible over there on the Republican side…
