Yup. I think a poll like this could have been more informative if a follow-up question asked: Which discussion of the following issues left you more favorably disposed to support which candidate: A) gun votes; B) Iraq votes; C) bank and Wall Street votes; D) foreign policy votes generally; E) jobs and economy votes, F) abortion, equal pay, women’s health issues votes; G) trade votes?
Because polls which do not include Biden the non-candidate give Hillary most of his percentages.
I’m a Sanders supporter, but Clinton clearly had the best debate performance so I’m not surprised to see her poll numbers up.
However, all Sanders supporters should still want more debates because he definitely needs the experience to hone his media skills, especially if there’s ANY possibility he’s going to make it to the general. As much as I hate to say it, some people won’t hear his message if they think he sounds like an angry old crank.
Clinton supporters should also want more debates. Here’s why:
IMO, Clinton sucks at canned speeches. She simply doesn’t sound natural (again, IMO). People say that she is great in small groups and I suspect it’s because she’s not just delivering lines. She can be herself. When she’s being herself she even says funny things like, “I was built in a garage.” Debates are somewhat similar in that she’s forced to react to the immediate situation and thus she sounds more natural, more likable.
Bottom line: Fewer debates simply hurts all the Democrats.
Really? Went through it and didn’t even see that question.
What struck me as odd, only 214 people out of 500 actually watched the debate Tuesday night.
Is that true?
I’ll be honest. I think we give voters way too much credit for voting on issues. I think a lot of our choice boils down to emotion, gut, and other soft things like “being presidential.” Of that group on that stage that night, Hillary Clinton was polished and diplomatic. She gave smart, nuance responses, she was funny, and she was at ease. She got pissed at the right time and she did not back down when you thought she might. She gave the air of being presidential, whatever that means. For good or bad, it is what it is.
I think having Webb and Chaffey up there made her look even that much better. I suspect a debate between only her and Sanders would be much harder to call.
But, but, but the media narrative is that Hillary is spiraling down word and crashing hard. How could this be??
I don’t think he can get away from his own delivery. It is who he is at this point. I’ll admit that I can’t stand the way he seems like he’s just yelling at me all the time, but what really worries me is that he will probably look worse when he’s up against a smooth double-talker who isn’t trying to be nice like Hillary was being. You could see her pulling her punches. Sanders up against a Rubio or a Cruz would be pretty tough to watch. And Trump would just Bro-Face him the whole night to great effect.

As a Bernie supporter who will vote for Hillary if, as expected, she wins the nomination, I have no particular reason to doubt this poll, though of course it will take a couple more polls to confirm the movement in Hillary’s direction in New Hampshire. I would just add that the last New Hampshire poll (that I am aware of) before the debate, by Gravis, had Sanders only ahead of her by 3 points. So, much (maybe even most) of the movement in HIllary’s direction in New Hampshire may have actually have come before the debate. Either way, it’s obviously good news for Hillary.
Now polls are just for fun, and the only ones paying attention are the 5-10% who are the political diehards. In a few months, more and more moderate voters will become engaged. I think Hillary will look more and more like the total package to the broadest spectrum of voters as time goes on… Also I think the only chance Bernie has is to hit her hard like the GOP would. He is not going to do that.
Is it true this poll is based on 214 respondents?
Edit to add: 500 respondents but only 214 watched the debate on Tuesday night. Is that true?
Here’s another poll showing HRC won.
But, but. but,how can this be? Bernie won all the (statistically meaningless) online insta-polls!
Here’s how to understand this:
The polls are taken with landlines (old people).
Most young people have cell phones (which are not polled).
If Sanders’ strategy is right (energize young people), we’ll wake up to another 1948 Dewey/Truman moment - OMG!
NIce try, except it’s no longer true that pollsters only call landlines.
Bernie Sanders will energize young people.
Um, okay.
Not saying Hillary will either, unless one is interested in health care and choice.
I don’t disagree that she was great and I also believe it depends on who you are backing in this campaign. I thought Bernie did very well and showed so much decency with his response to the emails fiasco. However, she is now up in the polls in NH for the first time so that may speak for itself.
Where’s that poster who claimed two weeks ago that Hillary “was toast”?
I want more debates so the Republicans don’t continue to hog the airwaves with their insane bullshit.
I’m with OldVet, more Democratic debates means more chances for voters to be reminded of the stark difference between the childish, grandstanding, backstabbing Republiclown “debates” and what an actual civil, intelligent, grown-up discussion of issues that actually matter to the future of this country.
My ideal debate schedule would be a Democratic debate one week after each Republican debate…just enough time for the media to get their jollies from being able to report the fallout from the latest Republican shit-wrestling fest, but then right back to the grown-ups.
By the way, I think it might make sense to add a couple of debates focused on specific issues, like foreign policy, economic and trade policy, environmental policy, criminal justice / law enforcement accountability, etc.
Just to clarify, this poll’s results were based on 500 calls with 62% “responders” (310 likely Democratic primary voters) of which only 214 actually watched the debate. This is laughable.
