Discussion: Poll: Blacks Twice As Likely To Say Ferguson Raises Issues About Race

Discussion for article #226567

In Ferguson last year, 86 percent of stops, 92 percent of searches and 93 percent of arrests were of black people.
This routine is true in many towns and counties across America with respect to minorities and revenue gathering.

Ignorance and fear wins out along the great racial divide in America, again.

So in other words. 67% of my fellow white people continue to live in a fantasy world when it comes to race. I sometimes wish we had an association (other than the overtly racist ones) so I could burn my membership card.

How is this poll helpful? What does it tell us that we don’t already know? That issues of race are polarizing to a lot of black and white people in this country? Yeah, I knew that.

Do we have to poll test everything?

In other news…water is wet.

The beneficiaries of white supremacy and the perpetrators of racism, when polled, proclaim, “Racism doesn’t exist. In fact, I’m colorblind. Racism is a figment of the black mind. Now, excuse me while I finish packing my Range Rover. We’ll never get to the Hamptons by noon at this rate.”

Which is the bigger problem in America, the persistence of racism, or all the white people who want to believe that racism no longer exists?

I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter, and this poll only reinforces my belief.

Guilt, greed and fear are too much for white America to deal with so the negroes are just sensitive.
Transport those MRAPs to Nevada and put 50 FBI agents and 30 BLM agents in them and tea party psychos would swear it was genocide.

Now what you have provided sylhines is a compilation of facts…statistics based on a retrieval and accumulation of hard-core data. Polls based on beliefs and feelings, particularly as it relates to race, are highly volatile and subject to a lot of variability. I hate these kind of polls, asking white people and black people why they see things differently. We all know no matter what’s revealed, a poll like this will be used to justify or condemn the worse aspects of our nature. I hope it doesn’t.

Maybe I’m just being overly-sensitive today…but the more we get away from the facts and into the territory of feelings and beliefs, the more we drown out what’s at the heart of this matter in Ferguson…that a young man was shot, and the Ferguson police in charge of the initial investigation hasn’t released anything substantially relevant related to the shooting in over a week, thereby leading to tempers running high, and justice being denied by slow-walking the facts and hiding the truth. Lots of young black teenagers in the street rightly believe this could be them next…with justice denied.

Ya think!!!

I do agree with you on this. And why are the results even surprising.

This is about class every bit as much as race. The case is made in a very articulate way here.

also…just because it polls well doesn’t make it morally the right thing either…

Proud to be in that 37%.

And whites are actually more likely to have contraband.

21.71% black
34.04% white

I am a genu-wine certified white person and I’m pretty damned sure that if Michael Brown had been white and all other cirucumstances were identical, he would not have been shot. In fact, nothing much would have happened to him.

True in the Ferguson case and probably true across the board. As far as your 60s comment, my freshman year 1968 we used “off-the-pig” and that was made illegal.

Isn’t Ferguson 70% black?

Wait a second: 63 percent of whites couldn’t bring themselves to answer that this case “raises concerns about race.” WTF. Somebody ought to make it more difficult for us white people to register to vote or something, because it appears that the majority of whites are incapable of even the most rudimentary reasoning.

67.4% black.

In the 2010 census, 29.3% were White and 67.4% were African American. So yes, a complete 73/25 turnaround since 1990. The Supreme Court case of Hazlewood, MO where St. Louis suburban cities and towns, denied black teaching applicants positions based on no openings while at the same time advertising in Mississippi for open positions, comes to mind. Speed traps towns and municipalities racing for revenue and insidious housing discrimination to ward off the in-migration of blacks. The present case is as bad as Milwaukee, Chicago, LA, NYC and Boston in the early 60s. The police are allowed to prey on the community.
