“The poll was
conducted from June 5–20 from a sample of 1,325 Americans and focused
on 650 respondents who “identify with or lean toward the Republican
Party.””
Is leaning even useful as a description in this. At this place in time, I would imagine they are for them or against them. There does not seem to be a lot of room for leaning anymore.
postponing 2020? I strongly suspect there is desire to eliminate the 2018 elections altogether if it lines up (as it looks like based on special election results) to be a democratic wave election.
A scenario that cannot be tolerated by repubes is one in which a democratic wave election in 2018 on the state level allows legislatures either to redraw districts for the 2020 presidential election (ala Texas’ off cycle redistricting in 2010), or modify voting eligibility requirements for that election, obviously there are issues with governors in some states signing off on something like this, but one can dream
Thank you, matthew1961. That was exactly what first came into my mind when I read this.
Those who self identify as Rethugs have now merged into the segment of the population that includes the Klan, outright fascists and the mentally ill. And no, I don’t think that’s hyperbole.
Article Two Clause 1: Executive Power
The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows…
You don't get to make your term four years and six months because you have some ballot issues you'd like to iron out.
Then again, by 2020 we may all be fighting with cockroaches and rats for scraps of food in various irradiated deserts.
With all due respect postponing the election over a phony voter problem that does not exist except in the minds of Republicans is just a fucking crazy idea.
Trump’s Evangelical Christianist base loves the idea of postponing the election because such a blatantly unconstitutional move would give them the opening to pursue their most cherished long-term goal: replace that hated Constitution with their own extensively cherry-picked and Jesus-blessed interpretation of the Bible.
Today’s Trumplican Party—at least as defined by its base—is nothing less than a theocratic party with overtly classical fascist leanings. Its members are colossally ignorant about American history and the Constitution, and are contemptuous of the ideals that undergirded its creation. Except for the slavery and firearms parts, of course.
With all due respect, these Republicans don’t deserve any respect. I think GOP strategist Rick Wilson agrees, FWIW:
"Six months in to the Trump presidency and you need a steady diet of fentanyl, Thunderbird, and head trauma to believe that Donald Trump is a master negotiator, a real leader, or any good at this whole presidenting thing. The national political stress test that is the Trump administration seems designed to force Republicans leaders into contortions that would break a Cirque de Soleil gymnast…
Trying to follow Trump’s manic changes of position on the doomed, roadkill-stank of the health care fight was like watching a cat chase a laser pointer. The GOP went into the fight without a real plan to market it, they let industry lobbyists craft it, and then they counted on Donald Freaking Trump to help sell it. Please clap.
To remind my Republican friends for the hundredth time, the Trump base isn’t your base. His supporters hate you as much as Trump hates you. Trump devotees don’t care about shrinking the size and scope of government. They don’t care about the Constitution. They’re not Republicans, except as a flag of convenience. If you haven’t noticed the theme from Fox to Rush and across the rest of the Trump-fanatic clickservative media isn’t “My God, this bill was political death for anyone who voted for it.” Instead, it was “Why won’t Republicans follow Donald Trump over the cliff? What good is a majority if it won’t destroy itself in a vote that 70 percent of the population hates?”
So, to my Republican elected friends, there are a lot of reasons that GOP Trumpism won’t work, but the biggest one is this: Donald Trump hates you. You are, at best, props and extras in “The Apprentice: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.” No matter how many times you abase yourself before him, no matter how much you grovel, it will never be enough. The moment you do anything to preserve your own political fortunes, he will turn on you. The moment you deviate from constant service to his colossal ego, you’re going to end up on blast. He has no allies. Only fluffers and foes.
If you don’t see it yet, the clickservative media and the Trump base is fundamentally nihilist. They hate you even more than Trump does. They’re the party of Uli Kunkel, not Ronald Reagan. They expect nothing but the spectacle, the house fire and the sound of glass breaking. The performance art of the one-man show “Red Don” is their only political satisfaction, and like junkies, they’re chasing the political dragon of more stimulation, more chaos, and more destruction."
The US has arranged a presidential election every four years since 1788, even during the civil war and two world wars. That’s an amazing set of data points. If we finally miss a timely presidential, it’s pretty strong evidence that we have slipped into a different sort of political arrangement.
There was something, also in the Post, speculating that when the Mueller indictments start coming down Trump will schedule one of his Pep Rallies and openly propose defiance of the electoral process as some here are proposing(pitchforks, etc.) If it happens, the reaction to it from congress and the public will tell us whether the Constitutional system is endangered.
I’d speculate it isn’t, but nobody’s got hard evidence.
Let’s just HAND COUNT the vote, right along with the electronic totals and hanging chads, HAND COUNT THE VOTE, we’ve been demanding this from THEM for decades, now maybe they’ll consider some sanity if they are serious.
This won’t last long, though, the cheaters on the right know their mischief is too exposed to push too hard for investigations into real election fraud, the kind Kobach and his pals commit when they switch the counts AFTER the votes.
VOTE-COUNT FRAUD, not voter fraud, is what they are going to expose if they go down this rabbithole of their own digging, and the MOST guilty already know that is inevitable if they let this roll.
I’m wondering if Mueller’s bird-dogs will make any connections there… are there emails or other forms of conspiracy hiding in all that evidence hinting at vote-flipping after-the-fact?
Think I’m overreaching? … think about it.
COUNT THE VOTE!!!
Every which way possible, and publish the results immediately to prevent them from flipping it after the count!!!
There is a good read in the Atlantic Magazine about how people in this country are becoming increasingly untethered to facts, logic, etc. It’s not surprising that when you repeatedly ask people questions with a ridiculous premise, you repeatedly get shocking feedback.
