Discussion: Politics, Outsider Status Shield Trump From House Oversight Committee Scrutiny

At a recent hearing on Clinton’s emails, Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee’s national security panel, lamented the zeal with which Republicans are pursuing Clinton. The hearing, Lynch said, was a “sad goddamned day” for the oversight committee.

But Lynch told the AP that he had no interest in a congressional probe of Trump. There are higher priorities, he said, and pursuing Trump would be seen as an attempt to drag down the Republican nominee.

“It’s bad enough what they’re doing with Secretary Clinton,” Lynch said. “I would not want to get into a quid pro quo type of thing. It’s beneath the committee.”

Donald Trump’s status as a Washington outsider fuels his fiery populism and also is helping to shield him from the scrutiny House Republicans are devoting to Hillary Clinton, a former U.S. senator and secretary of state.

Right that’s whats protecting him from House Republicans. Republicans would be all about conducting political witch hunts against their party’s Presidential nominee like they are the Democratic candidate if he just wasn’t such a political outsider. Seriously though when can we get an eye-roll emoji up in here, words just can’t express the cartwheels that statement has got my eyes doing.

I’m actually not that upset that the House Oversight Committee isn’t pursuing investigations into private citizens, no matter how odious those citizens might be. The FEC, SEC, and DOJ can deal with Trump’s illegal activities.

I’m actually curious if the FEC will do anything post-election. Sure it’s an allegedly impartial organization crippled by partisan obstinacy, but if Trump loses bigly and the Senate flips the Republican appointees might seek vengeance.

I get your point and agree to a point (scuse that). You can kindly term Trump a “private citizen”, but he’s the Republican nominee, is seeking public office, has a security clearance, and is privy to security briefings. Trump is no more a “private citizen” than is Paul Ryan.
