Discussion: Politico Source: President’s Lawyers Open To Mueller Interviewing Trump

In one of those interview rooms they have on Law and Order, I hope. With the bad furniture and the bright light, and the one-way glass.

Well c’mon – he has to have a private one-on-one with Bobby Three Sticks in order to spell out the terms of the offer.

This would be a huge mistake on the part of TrUmps legal, team.

Bet the narcissist thinks he can talk his way out of this

Why yes, because the President’s lawyers are certain of one thing. Trump knows NOTHING!

Sure, now that dementia has set in, they’ll let Trump talk to Mueller.

Yeah. There is absolutely no reason for him to testify unless he’s forced to. He will absolutely lie in that interview. Because what the FBI (and really any LE) does is asks you questions they already know the answer to. Then when you lie, they threaten you with perjury or obstruction.

Trump has made 1200 public lies or misleading statements this year alone (according to the Wash. Post).

This would be dangerously stupid. Also, I doubt Mueller wants to interview him at this point. There are still a lot of rocks, big and small, to overturn in this case.

Well, so they say today. For the PR (“nothing to see here!”) value, nothing more.

On the other hand, what a great PR way to make Two Scoops look like a victim to his slavering masses. Which is probably their intent.

But, imagine Donnie forced to actually answer (and honestly!) a question for once — his lawyers will never let it happen.

I’m honestly not sure why Mueller ought to bother. Trump’s statements are without meaning. He could admit on camera to firing Comey to obstruct the investigation and it wouldn’t mean a thing.

He did. To Lester Holt.

Then he did again to Russians in the Oval Office.

Trump’s lawyers want to gauge Mueller’s direction by seeing what kind of questions he asks. As soon as it gets sticky they shutdown the interview.

The only real question here is how not to make such an interrogation a complete waste of time.

Unless it’s just a PR stunt. Trump falls and hits his head on the way to testify and stays in a coma for the next three years. Republicans proclaim his innocence since he was willing to testify and Pence gets to continue to destroy our democracy.

This is yet another page of a particularly bizarre chapter known as Team Trump’s legal defense. In my imaginary Netflix series about this sad chapter in our history (and there’s a chance it might be the last chapter in the history of the US as we know it), there’s an episode devoted to examples of bad legal representation like talking openly about a case in the outdoor area of a DC restaurant.

The Cobb theory is that other people may have liability exposure in #trumprussia but Trump does not. He will refer to Flynn and Manafort (and in hushed tones, Kushner). Therefore, the investigation should be wrapped up quickly. Cobb is assuming that Team Trump has told him the truth and that he isn’t withholding anything. In Cobb’s view, Trump’s risk is obstruction of justice, not the underlying matters that are being investigated. Cobb isn’t doing his own investigation because he doesn’t want to know. That’s the thing with all the key Trump witnesses and defendants: they lie or withhold information from their attorneys in order to manipulate them through the legal process.

This theory has captured Trump’s attention because it allows him to wave that faux shield of innocence and appeal to his desire for validation in terms of a statement that he is not under investigation. Cobb keeps Trump in line by keeping the shiny object of ‘exoneration’ and ‘wrapping up the investigation’ in front of him. Cobb keeps setting up his client for perjury traps and for witnesses who turn adverse to Trump because Cobb’s strategy is that Trump has nothing to do with #trumprussia. Therefore, he won’t pardon anyone connected with it (other than family) because that would implicate Trump in obstruction. That’s why we see Carter Page stating that he would plead the 5th Amendment, and that he may have become Mueller’s witness. Page can’t get a pardon. Manafort will not be pardoned for anything. Neither will Flynn.

It also flies in the face of mounting evidence that there were repeated contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia, repeated discussions on business dealings between Trump co and Russia which posed a conflict of interests, unusual alignment of messaging between the Trump campaign and Russia, and meetings where quid pro quos were discussed (down the hall from where he was sitting). No jury is going to believe that these individuals acted without the approval or encouragement of Trump.

I remember when it would have been a remarkable thing that a sitting President was incompetent to testify in an investigation.

Sounds like Emmy material. You should pitch it to Trump.

What would be worse? If he lied or told the truth? Too stupid to lie well, and also not smart enough to know when to stfu.

They don’t care if Trump talks to Mueller because Trump doesn’t know shit.

Sounds like tRump’s lawyers are privately giving up on him and slipping anonymous sourced information to the press. Perhaps they’ve thrown up their arms dealing with him too. I can see that happening. The man doesn’t listen to anyone, even his own lawyers if he doesn’t agree with them. Getting him in an interview would be peachy as far as I’m concerned. More useful than anyone might realize. Mueller has to first consider his timing, though. It’ll happen…eventually. After all, lying to a federal investigator or prosecutor by itself is against the law. Perjury and lying to the Feds can be just one more count added to the list of criminal complaints against this fucker.

I agree. But he doesn’t have to choose at this point. He can do nothing. He can lie and deny everything in public and his base will believe every word he says.

Watch interviews of Trump supporters. They just say “fake news!”
