OT – Irma might be heading straight for Mar-a-Lago.
He can keep quiet and keep making specie. Now if he chooses to do that, it would hobble ya right to criticize him for not talking about DACA.
But hey, decisions, decisions.
there is a God
He may feel he has to weigh in on this regardless. Simple decency would require it , and if he didn’t speak out, it might be necessary to start writing him out of the picture. As far as political calculations, I think he’s been saving his capital for just such an occasion. His opposition would rile Trump up, sure, but Trump’s clearly obsessed with undoing his legacy anyway. As one of the most admired politicians and people in the country right now, he could galvanize the opposition. And we’ve seen Trump back down from concerted opposition time and time again. The GOP’s learning you can buck Trump and survive; he’s eminently buckable, in fact. And this move is not not not not popular. So as always it’s a 51-49 thing.
Though he realizes that he will be the focal point of the issue (DACA), I have to give him credit for trying not to be the issue’s center.
Again, he has to pick his spots.
I’m gonna cut a little slack …
Getting dosages right is always … tricky ----
OK So Trump waffles here but “leans abolish”, and public pressure is let loose on Congress. Don’t know how that’ll come out, but for once Donald appears to be listening to somebody who’s not a political idiot. I don’t give Trump credit for knowing squat himself.@clunkertruck @mattinpa @inversion
I think this is a moral issue for Obama. It strikes to the core of who we are as a people and if we’re going to keep our Promise as a land of dreams and opportunity for all. This transcends politics and strategic calculations, in my opinion.
If we throw these young people out of the only country they’ve ever known, it’ll be an indelible stain on America.
Based on past experience, I suspect it will later (make sense, that is).
I know that I’m going to have to cut a rodent, a royalty check, but that’s a rather loose interpretation of ‘lean’.
where did I put my popcorn?
ummmm
ummm
There is no ’ good ’ choice on this …politically —
A) he ends it and dumps it on Congress …
Congress is pissed
B) he sides with the kids …
His base is pissed
He’s just doing what he always does … no matter what …
Getting someone (somebody) else to take the blame ----
Well, I’m sure that would never have occurred to anyone in this little chess game…
And I’m sure that it was pure accident that Politico had the scoop…
I betting that’s what he does and yeah they will be pissed off at him and perhaps they’ll legislate in retaliation and solve this.
As a general rule, ex-Presidents have been very reluctant to say anything critical about their successors, and this reticence has transcended party lines, personality, etc.
They, more than anyone else, understand just how bleedin’ hard the job is, after all. Obama would naturally tend to follow this tradition.
The current awful mistake of an incumbent is materially different from his 44 predecessors, however. Comes a time, sooner or later, when an honest man of principle can no longer stay silent.
This is actually the better for the kids …
If he chooses to continue DACA … it will ONLY be to boost his own ’ crowd size ’ —
While …behind the scene … he does everything he can to undermine it for his base — Like healthcare —
Y’all must be forgetting that before he left Barrack told us that he would have something to say if his Dreamers were getting fucked over.
I agree. They should pass a law - an EO was never the best solution it was just all Obama had.
Dear Mar a Lago maintenance staff: PLEASE strategically loosen a few screws and bolts as you are “battening down the hatches”. Nothing would make me happier than to see that stupid shithole razed to the ground.
Good, Obama is quite popular, and so is the idea of letting the Dreamers stay. This is a good opportunity for the most popular high-profile Democrat in the country (excluding Michelle Obama as not a politician, technically, and Bernie Sanders as not a Democrat, technically) to reinforce that the Democratic Party stands for compassion and decency and pragmatism, and to contrast that with the moral bankruptcy and xenophobic extremism and ideological dogmatism of the Party of Trump.
As I understand it, Trump’s proposal is to cancel DACA in six months. Best case scenario is that by forcing the issue, Congress finally acts to create a DACA program through legislation, which could end up putting it on more solid footing for the long run.
Of course Trump will try to use this to extract concessions, like wall funding, but he’s not in a particularly favorable situation to do so, given his lousy relationships with a growing number of members of his own party in Congress, especially the Senate.
Meanwhile isn’t it interesting watching GOPers in Congress saying they’re all for letting the Dreamers stay, they just objected to it being done through an Executive Order. Which raises the question “so why haven’t you just passed legislation then, which would supercede the EO?” Such transparent bullshit artists.
In support of that theory: GOP lawmaker aims to force vote to protect Dreamers (should be lawmakers, plural):
Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) said Thursday he’ll attempt to force a vote on a bill that would extend protections for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as minors.
The bill already has 12 Republican cosponsors in the House, in addition to Coffman. In the Senate, a companion measure was introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Dick Durbin of Illinois, and it has support from GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Jeff Flake of Arizona.
