Those ranchers in Western Kansas don’t give a rats ass about drowning government in a bathtub or exotic social issues. They want somebody to represent them on the AG committee to make sure their subsidies keep flowing. Huelskamp wasn’t smart enough to realize he was out of step with his constituents.

I’m a Kansas native who left there 35 years ago, and was proud of it. With all the Brownback idiocy, I’m now calling it Kansabama.

How the hell is this a DNC fail? If you’re going to attack someone/something, at least get the parameters for info correct.
First, the D-Trip runs the Democratic arm of Dems in the House and is the active recruiter for said Dems. The DNC is primarily concerned with fundraising; if they get involved with recruiting, it’s usually with the Senate or Governor. Second, recruiting doesn’t happen in a vacuum; if the bench is weak, it is what it is. A lot of people don’t have the interest or the ability. I doubt KS Dems really want to let a seat go unchallenged. But you can’t put people up if they don’t want to or can’t do it.
I don’t mind the independent voice, but you’ve got to figure out how to work with people

One common thread I have noticed From Trump to Huelskamp, is that elections are only legitimate when they win.
I remember being surprised when a Colorado congresswomen name Marilyn Musgrave lost her seat to a Democrat in the 2008 wave election, and refused to concede or congratulate the winner. Now it is SOP for Tea Partiers to blame the media, vicious lies, smears and whatever for there losses.
Sore losers the lot of them.

There is no Democratic party to speak of in Kansas. Remember Kansas is one of those states abandoned by the DNC after Howard Dean was ousted.

Kansans, even conservative folk, are mostly nice. Huelskamp was an asshole. An unmitigated, unapologetic, self-serving asshole. That’s why he lost. Oh, that and the Farm Bureau supporting his candidate.

I just get tired of hearing people run their mouths about unchallenged seats. Look, I don’t live in these areas so I don’t know what the circumstances are. I’m not gonna play armchair quarterback about getting “someone” in there. And even if you DID get “someone” in there, anyone with a pulse, would it be worth it? As you say, there are some situations where it must be like swimming into a 20 ft wave; some will/can do it. Most, not. There are a lot of things to consider when running for office.
EDIT TO ADD: And then when “someone” does decide to run for House Dem in some of these really red areas, then they’re looked down on because there’re not progressive enough.

I understand that you can’t win if you’re not playing. I get that. But having said that, if the odds against you are so high not to mention the sh*t you have to go through in order to make the cut, it probably turns a lot of people off and you can’t force people to run. You can’t expect that there will be a bench of good people (EDIT TO ADD: Emphasis on the words “good people” not just a Dem with a pulse) to make the race viable.
I’ve heard that the KS Dem Party really is weak and hopefully, the fact that so many RWNJ’s were rejected by the voters will give them a glimmer of hope that they can attract some good people
Once the conservatives took over the GOP, their next target was the DEMs. The Stupak Amendment illustrated that risk and Blue Dogs were dumped in part in reaction. Certainly true of Stupak himself. The danger on the other hand is that we lost the majorities.

An unusual case, in that Huelskamp lost to a challenge on his left. Usually the GOPers lose to a challenge on the right. Perhaps the lunacy has hit bottom in KS.

Easier said than done. In many places, such as my state in Flyover Land, the GOP is very dominant. To run against a rural GOP state senator or rep, you expend energy, time, and money, and lose anyway. The D Party is totally uncompetitive in rural areas. Until the D Party asks why that is, the D Party will continue to lose, and see seats like this one with no D candidate.
