Discussion for article #226518
Cops intentionally provoking violence to cover tracks of previous murder. And it’s going to work.
These “protesters” are quickly losing the sympathy and respect of a nation.
The current violent protesters are in the minority. Cpt Johnson has done everything in his power to restore peace to the community. Now it’s time for the community to support his efforts.
Wilson is in some Klan compound deep in the Ozarks. We may never see him again. His wife can cash the pension checks.
And as five armored tactical vehicles approached the crowd, officers spoke through a loudspeaker: “You are in violation of a state-imposed curfew. You must disperse immediately. Failure to comply, may result in arrest.”
Our long-anticipated, dystopian future has arrived. Or, maybe it’s been here for some time and I just haven’t been paying attention.
And the Chief of Police has done everything in his power to inflame the situation and protect his trigger-happy officer.
Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
This town needs assurance from some entity the residents can trust that this will be investigated properly, and I hope that assurance comes before someone else gets killed.
“If you’re not a cop, you’re little people.” – Bryant, Rep-Detect Captain in “Blade Runner”
WTF!!! The headline says cops used teargas to enforce the curfew, but the very first paragraph says it wasn’t curfew violations that caused the police response? Are there NO competent editorial staff left at TPM?!!!
I sure hope you are right. I think that entity has been shown to be Capt. Ron Johnson of (I think) the State Highway Patrol. Treat folks with some dignity and they’ll calm down. But there will always be some who flat out don’t understand. Johnson needs to be exceedingly careful or this will blow up again. several Fed agencies are in that town working the case. They need to work quickly and get answers. And then make them public…
The article was written by the AP, not TPM. Why not scold the AP?
Lets have an Open Carry party!!!
If by “restore peace” you mean “stop protesting” then you are wrong. They need to keep protesting and keep protesting louder and louder. The instant they get quiet, this goes under the rug and Darren Wilson get off the hook with NO PUNISHMENT, and Michael Brown becomes yet another unarmed black man killed by the police just because the officer happened to be angry at something else that day.
If they could assign discipline to it that would help. They could chose leaders, and sub-leaders, divisions shifts, etc.
They could make a clear demand. “We stop protesting when Wilson is arrested.”
But IF THEY WANT JUSTICE THEY MUST NOT ALLOW THAT TOWN TO GO BACK TO BUSINESS IS USUAL.
The governor wants business as usual because he is embarrassed and if he had any Presidential aspirations, like most governors do, they are rapidly going down the drain. However, he has no intention in making sure that Wilson pays for this crime. Residents must not give him peace until he does.
There is no way to give an assurance other than to actually do something. But they don’t want to do anything and the entire town knows it, no, the entire country knows it. Everybody knows what the answer is, arrest Officer Darren Wilson. But the authorities have made it clear that arresting him is not on the table.
Therefore, the people keep protesting, therefore the rights of the people go out the window.
So you get state crackdowns, the police MRAP’s and using tear gas on people pointing out that they have the right to peaceably assemble.
Don’t confuse the protesters with these looting and rioting animals. They are NOT the same, despite the media’s attempt to paint them with the same brush to enforce their “cops beating up protesters” narrative.
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating, so hopefully that will remove the alleged bias by the local police force. But the only result that certain people will be satisfied with is a finding that Officer Wilson was not justified in shooting Mr. Brown. Anything less than that will likely result in more riots and looting.
They turn out five armored vehicles for a report of some guys breaking into a barbecue joint? Hmm.
