What a tragedy for this family and their other children.
I have a niece at CMU ā had a moment of OMG when the first headlines came though.
What a horrible tragedy.
The easy access Iād be worried about is to guns. Furthermore, if he was a student there and his parents were picking him up for spring break, heād have legitimate access to the dorm, as would they.
yay guns
well at least it wasnāt the 35th mass shooting this year since only 2 were killed
Ah, was anyone else disappointent that the new information contained in this articleās title appeared nowhere in the article ?
TMP headlines can occasionally confuse or mischaracterize content.
Saw this comment at another blog today:
[TPM headlines] too often paraphrase a (false) Trump or Trump-minion claim. An example today might be āJohn Kelly On Porter: āI Have Nothing To Even Consider Resigning Overāā. A neutral headline might read āKelly Refuses to Resign Over Handling of Porterā. An accurate headline might be āKelly Continues to Lie About His Handling of Porterā.
The post itself was complementary to Josh but I found myself agreeing with the comment too because, in fact, the article in question did make it clear that Kellyās account was inconsistent with the established evidence and testimony. Unfortunately it made it clear in a manner that is also a major problem at many mainstream outlets: it did so at the end of the article with no alert in the headline or lede; a critical point of the article was figuratively buried below the fold. This has happened more than once at TPM and it would be good to see that change.
I took a quick look and didnāt see anything much more enlightening than the headline here, simply confirmation the gun was registered to his father. A pistol, Iād guess. Undoubtedly bought for protection.
This is a crystal clear example of two excess deaths caused by the availability of guns. An unstable young person with mental health/hostility issues + parents is a phenomenon that is very common everywhere in the world. Itās practically normal. Now add an accessible gun to the equation. The situation ceases to be normal, with utterly tragic and avoidable consequences.
TPM does seem to regularly reproduce or paraphrase headlines when echoing stories from other sources rather than originating their own headline or lede so I assumed the original source contained some reference to the gunās owner that got left out in the TPM post thus rendering the headline ridiculous; i.e., other than the headline there was nothing in the TPM article about the gun at all.
Hence the observation that Josh may wish to take a look at his headline/lede policy.
Or, you know, because his father was a cop. ie: was this his service sidearm? Was it taken from him by his son right before being used? Was there a struggle?
Those were all the questions I was wondering about. Who brought the gun to campus in the first place? Murder-suicide (where somehow the suicide part didnāt happen)? Apprehended without incident also suggests that some of the widespread panic may not have been as warranted as usual.
