Discussion: Police Identify Shooter In UCLA Murder-Suicide As Grad Student

Mainak Sarkar. Great, now we have to institute a ban on over a billion Indians entering the country. Why can’t someone from France pull a stunt like this?

I saw a couple of reports that he was angry and depressed over a break up with a girlfriend; harbored resentment towards his former professor for the stated reasons; was very paranoid and felt his life was spiraling out of control. It was a lethal cocktail that obviously resulted in his targeting his former teacher.

[Mainak Sarkar was confirmed by law enforcement on June 2nd, 2016 to be the killer of William Klug during the UCLA Shooting. Sarkar used a 9 millimeter pistol to shoot the professor and then himself.
Sarkar wrote a blog article describing his hatred of Klug. The blog article was deleted but Google cached it and it was thus retrievable.
Sarkar had broken up with his girlfriend Ashley Hasti, and they had stopped being friends on Facebook.

Career Dr. Mainak Sarkar works as an engineering analyst at Endurica LLC.
From 2005-2007 he worked as a software developer at Lucid Technologies.
From 2002-2003 he worked as a research assistant a the University of Texas at Arlington. From 2000-2001 He worked for Infosys Ltd. in Bangalore, India.
Education Dr. Mainak Sarkar graduated from UCLA with
a PhD in mechanical engineering in 2013. For his PhD Dr. Sarkar took
courses in Fracture Mechanics, Computational, Solid Mechanics, Finite
element Analysis, Theory of Shells and Plates. While at UCLA
he worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses (Finite
Element Analysis, Statics and Dynamics, Applied Mathematics) in
Mechanical Engineering.
In 2005, he graduated from Stanford University with
a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2000 he
graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur with a
degree in Aerospace Engineering. ]

This from Sarkar’s blog (since deleted).

Professor Klug had, from what I’ve seen online, sterling credentials and a reputation for fairness, hard work and honesty to match. His former student should have moved on to a wonderful and accomplished life; he had the background and the potential. What a horrible tragedy all round.

Nice to see immigrants embracing Real American values and arming themselves. If all immigrants did the same we would have much lower crime rates.

I suspected the story would be along these lines when I first heard about the incident. As an academic, this is one of my nightmares.

Dealing with students/trainees can sometimes get emotionally charged. This shouldn’t be a surprise because the students are trying to build their future. A LOT is riding on these student-faculty relationships. A lot of people sit at the precipice of instability, in the sense that they are in a highly vulnerable period of their lives.

Obviously, this is a big reason why faculty do not want guns on campus.

Watch someone toil away for months on a dissertation defense in some arcane inorganic chemistry application. Years of study and thousands of hours on the line. Me, I’d want a bodyguard if I was a juror and had to tell that person what they just presented was woefully lacking.

So now it’s the left’s turn to beat up on France? We become more like them every day.

If you read some of Sarkar’s posts, it’s fairly obvious he had problems with paranoia.

Im sure Klug would have rethought the whole guns for teachers thing at the moment this guy pulled HIS gun…Bad guys with guns doing what bad guys do…

Thats what participation trophies are for…nobody’s feelings have to get hurt…win, win!

There lies the problem. You pump into someone’s head that success means X and anything other than X is failure. You’ve basically just told that person that their life is over if they don’t achieve X. It doesn’t take much mental instability to push someone over the edge.

Another person who shouldn’t have had a gun. Maybe since it’s so hard to spot who should and shouldn’t have one, nobody should… Just a thought.

It is not easy to be a teacher/professor/manager/leader of any sort when it is your job to push/coax/demand people to perform a task subject to rigorous standards in an age when many people feel entitled to success and might just be packing heat. Especially if the person in question has emotional issues that one is not adequately trained to respond to.

And I’m sure that simplifying a complex situation to Fox talking points creates a pablum you can swallow easily.

All together now: THERE ARE TOO MANY GUNS OUT THERE!

In 2005 Republican Senator from Idaho Larry Craig introduced a bil to grant immunity to gun manufacturers.

The bill was enacted and signed by President Bush.

The bill passed the Senate mostly along party lines with 50 republicans, 14 democrats and 1 independent voting yea. Among those democrats were conservative blue dogs like Max Baucus and Blanche Lincoln.

The Nay votes included many of the stalwarts of the progressive movement in congress. They included: Barbara Boxer, Ron Wyden, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Daniel Inouye, Ted Kennedy!

In the house, same thing, 223 republicans, 59 democrats and 1 indpendendent voted Yea.

The Nay votes in the house included progressive liberals like Raul Grijalva, Nancy Pelosi, Hilda Solis, Maxine Waters, and Barney Frank. Even Rahm Emanuel was a Nay vote.

Representative Bernie Sanders of Vermont voted YEA along with notable conservative zealots like Darrell Issa, Tom Tancredo, Todd Akin, Bobby Jindal, Steve King and Marsha Blackburn

We should simply employ a blanket ban on anyone who can even remotely be described as “dusky hued.” It’s the only way to be sure.

It’s way too soon to politicize this. Didn’t you get the memo? Now is not the time to talk about gun control.

there too many nut jobs out there!!! This guy showed all the signs and they were ignored…
