We don’t know what was going through his mind at the time.
I do — the windshield.
And the M.O. ruled not a suicide means his family get life insurance payoff and everything.
was he listening to Sammy Hagar’s ‘I Can’t Drive 55’?
or the Beatles ‘A Day in the Life’? he blew his mind out in a car…
As far as I could tell, the police have not determined whether or not it’s a suicide yet.
I’m not seeing a ruling at this time, but suicide is not an automatic “no payment” situation. There is generally a 2 year rule, meaning if the policy was new (or a change to an existing policy) within 2 years, you don’t get the death benefit (you only get what was paid in). But once over 2 years, the benefit is generally payable, but it can take a lot more time to collect it.
You don’t have to prosecute all the CEOs to reign in the reckless behavior – just enough to make a prison term seem like a possibility.
Why not prosecute all that violate the law? It’s the correct thing to do.
The amazing thing about Chesapeake Energy is that it didn’t go out of business earlier. According to various reports, it survived through a lot of creative financing, tax gimmicks, luring in Chinese investors, shortchanging property owners in Pennsylvania, etc., etc. This started long before prices started falling.
Predicting what’s going to happen in the fossil fuel industries going forward is not easy. But oil, gas and coal are in trouble and will continue to be in trouble going forward. Climate warming is no longer ignorable. Alternative energy is now advanced enough to be a threat to fossil fuels. The price war in the last 18 months or so has crashed profitability for fossil fuels. Why, there’s even a little less money for bribing politicians, either here at home or overseas. If prices go any lower, fracking and tar sands will have more trouble making money. If prices go higher, than solar and wind gain even more competitive advantage as their efficiency increases and prices continue to fall. Of course oil is notorious for its games and may have more tricks up its sleeve.
Only politics and corruption can save fossil fuels. By all means, vote Republican if you hate your children and grandchildren and want to burn the Earth to a crisp. But if you’re serious about taking on global warming, smart politicians need to separate workers from the fossil fuel industry by making sure fossil fuel workers get good jobs doing something else. I’m thinking particularly of coal. Maybe then, the fossil barons will either find something more useful to do with their money or go out of business. One should not ignore that 2015 really was the hottest year on record. This year would be a good year to do something about it.
It seems odd to use the term “titan” to describe a plain-vanilla resource thief. Mark Twain did a better job on his favorite robber baron:
“The multimillionaire disciples of Jay Gould — that man who in his brief life rotted the commercial morals of this nation and left them stinking when he died — have quite completely transformed our people from a nation with pretty high and respectable ideals to just the opposite of that; that our people have no ideals now that are worthy of consideration; that our Christianity which we have always been so proud of — not to say vain of — is now nothing but a shell, a sham, a hypocrisy; that we have lost our ancient sympathy with oppressed peoples struggling for life and liberty; that when we are not coldly indifferent to such things we sneer at them, and that the sneer is about the only expression the newspapers and the nation deal in with regard to such things.”
Quite astonishing cowardice.
Too many, not enough time, resources or courts.
