Similar incident happened in Iowa City several years ago. Asshole used a bat. So you never know.

Is this news (beyond the immediate community where it happened) because it happened in an “affluent suburb”? There was a gruesome murder in my town yesterday, but it was just a couple of Asians who died. TPM hasn’t covered it yet.

Exactly, what the hell does “affluent” have to do with it? These murder suicides are common, and I have not found income, race, religion, etc., to have any relevance. It’s almost as if the author took some kind of pleasure in this being an affluent family.

To be fair, it’s an AP story, not written by a TPM staffer, so it is a question of editorial selection. Wasn’t there something else on the wire that would be more relevant to the TPM readership’s interests?

I think sometimes there is an automatic assumption that gun violence ‘can’t happen to me.’ In that vein, it might be useful to understand where the horrible incident happened.

As always, the proximate cause is going to be easy access to guns.

It appears to be a gun, and it appears the father did it to his wife and kids before turning the gun on himself. He may not have been able to pull it off without the gun.

Not really. Most of these folks have never had any interaction with the mental health system. But of course that doesn’t let the system off the hook for the lives it does screw up or fails to help.
