Discussion: Police Defend Free Military Gear: 'Should Not Unnerve A Law-Abiding Citizen'

Discussion for article #226728

They are kidding with this right? You shouldn’t be unnerved by the small army rolling through your neighborhood?

You don’t want a community to be taken over by one or many criminals

When has that ever happened?

“Police officers are human and bleed like everyone else. They deserve the best protection from violent assaults, and providing them with MRAPs or advanced body armor minimizes their exposure to serious injury or death.”

Well, then, so do I. Size 12, please.

That last part is key, Lomax added: Training. That could be grounds for reform, he said, as long as the agencies continued to receive the equipment.

The military-industrial complex is strong in this one!

Just like a copper saying, “If you are innocent, you have nothing to fear.” Oh yeah?

Yeah, exactly.
Which is why we’d like one group in particular to relinquish the military gear.
Actually, as long as we’re on the subject, let’s take the military gear away from the right-wing nutjobs too. After all, we don’t want a community to be taken over by one or many criminals.

Defensive words - violence creates violence - weapons of war are weapons of war not means of ‘peace-making and keeping’ - it is difficult to hear what you are saying from deep inside your MRAP!

“The presence of an MRAP for defensive positioning should not unnerve a law-abiding citizen,”

Well…I am a law abiding citizen and I have yet to see other citizens lobbying hand grenades or land mines to the police in this Country. Body armor and shields were more than enough to protect police against Ferguson’s most hotheaded demonstrators. Sorry but yes, I will be very unnerved by a cop looking at me through a scope while inside a MRAP if I ever chose to protest about something I’m displeased with.

Not if you stay in your house, lock your doors and windows, close the curtains, hide under your bed, and never speak out. Why should you be unnerved?

This statement is only intended for whites. No expressed or implied non-threats to non-regular people are made. Local reactions may vary. Representatives of law enforcement, equipment manufacturers, purveyors and politicians are not responsible for personal health or property damage due to misuse.

“The police have to be one step ahead of the criminal element, have to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. You don’t want a community to be taken over by one or many criminals,” Mark Lomax, executive director of the National Tactical Officers Association, told the Beast. “We’re definitely for equipping our law enforcement officials out there properly, with proper training and proper policies.”

Crime is at the lowest level since the 1960s. So, of course, every podunk police department must be equipped like a horde of heavily armed zombie apocalypse motorcycle gangsters is going to zoom in and take over the town without warning. And we honest citizens should sleep soundly knowing there is no chance that the availability of military gear won’t make them overreact to more mundane situations. Yeah, makes perfect sense to me.

…belief that the programs, which help agencies obtain things like the mine-resistant MRAP vehicles, should not be cut off.

A kid is jaywalking and for that cops need MRAPs? What happens during a bank robbery? Air strikes?

Yeah, because law-abiding citizens NEVER suffer from police brutality. Because all police are good. Yep.

I think they are forgetting that protesters are law abiding citizens. So when you have just ‘in their minds if not yet clear in fact’ killed an young, black unarmed man and you show up in your camouflage and train your rifles on the crowd… the law abiding citizen crowd… of course they are going to feel intimidated, fearful, and that they are under threat of harm from the police just for protesting which is their lawful right. You don’t get trust from the people without demonstrating that you are trustworthy.

…and you also have nothing to fear from searches if you have nothing to hide.

Time to start paring down the Bill of Rights to a manageable few.

How about we bar ex-military from becoming police officers? Wouldn’t want that military training to get in the way of their training.
