Discussion for article #228638
Where’s the cop’s body cam video?
I think you’re missing the word “not” in the parens in the 4th paragraph, no?
Put Wilson and this guy on trial- a fair, impartial trial somewhere where it can be fair and impartial- and see if they’re convicted!
We don’t have enough facts to be outraged just yet. St. Louis is not St. Louis County or Ferguson. I agree, we need to make sure every officer wears a body cam at all times.
I’m going to need more than the word of family members who weren’t there before I start my outrage. Not saying the police aren’t above fucking up that badly, but there is nothing here yet.
Reading between the lines - the fact that Dotson mentions they found three projectiles with trajectories going down hill leads me to believe they didn’t find a weapon.
I believe it’s been reported that a weapon was recovered, but I inferred was not on the individual’s person because he was described as “unarmed.”
FFS!
/flees article before rage sets in
One question, where is the gun the guy used? Second question, how does the guy’s family know what happened, doesn’t sound like they were there at all. The coroner will be able to tell if he was tased.
Several years ago I was teaching a criminology class at the university level. One evening, I jokingly asked the police in class (most were not police - just students taking the course for credit) if they carried “throwaways.” To my surprise they all said “yes.” As they explained to the class, they didn’t want to kill anyone, but if they accidentally killed an unarmed person, they didn’t want that to ruin their career.
Off duty police officers don’t wear body cameras. STL police don’t have/use them currently as the officer’s union is negotiating with the Police on there use.
The fact that this guy was a police officer is just meant to muddy the waters.
The fact that the person who did the killing is a police officer does not matter in this case. When the killing happened, the person was working for a private security firm and should be treated just like you and me if we worked for a private security firm and killed someone.
The Post Dispatch article reports this:
Police said they recovered a 9mm Ruger.
In the heat of the moment, they could easily have dropped a throwaway gun by the suspect but planting slugs behind the officer? I think that seals the deal the police are telling the truth.
Why? Because the officer’s fingerprints on the suspect’s gun could “only” have come from when they were allegedly involved in CQC?
/flees again to avoid further rage buildup
You people are fools if you think making the police wear cameras is going to change the massive racial injustice going on in this country.
Throwaway piece: “The Policeman’s Alibi”?
Is it going to singlehandedly change racial feelings in this country? No. BUT, it will force police to be much more forthcoming in their dealings with people of all races. No more “he said, she said”. The camera + recordings will tell all.
Look, no one is saying that body cams are a panacea. But right now all we have are the statements by the officers, which have been shown in many instances, by cameras, to not match the video. Cameras simply provide a deterrent and more information when there is an incident.
