Discussion for article #223585
I think the question we all fear to be answered: How many will die in the next swimming pool massacre?
I absolutely hate these gun fetishists assholes. They’re now affecting the quality of life in this country. Today, I was out running errands and a car backfired a couple of times. I immediately turned into Adrian Peterson. I was doing fake moves and running low behind cars. It was a horrific feeling. You never know when a shooting is going to jump off and it doesn’t matter whether you live in the hood or the suburbs.
Hey, it’s not just this country any more:
Rampage north of the border (actually, Moncton is sort of east of the border).
Hey, what could go wrong with guns on university campuses? Doesn’t everyone want to send their kids to an anyone-can-carry campus?
I don’t know about the rest of you, but those campuses will be off limits for my grandchildren. My time has past to have kids there.
One of the shooting victims just died.
Guns make it too easy for assholes to terrorize us.
False equivalency. It is a much more rarer occurrence in Canada than in the US.
According to the CDC, between 2005-2009, there were an average of 3,533 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States. Plus, one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. And, for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
When are we going to put an end to this madness?
So, since people die in other ways (and accidentally at that), we’re not allowed to do anything to save anyone else? Because people drown, we’re not allowed to put seat belts or airbags in cars? We’re not alllowed to improve airline safety?
Tell you what. The next time you decide to paste something from some rightwing website that you think is clever, have someone intelligent read it and tell you if pasting it’ll make you sound like a complete imbecille, because that post certainly did.
Another stunning success for the NRA policy of arming morons and criminals.
Is the gun OK? Will it need therapy before it can kill again? Has it been returned to its proper owner, for cleaning and reloading?
And Please don’t tell me it hasn’t been cleaned yet. THAT would be unacceptable in America!
Yep. And guess what? It turns out it was a gun control hating, right wing nut job.

We are a country suffering of PTSD.
Well, I’d certainly hope it was before the point where people were allowed to carry around their own swimming pools and risk drowning* others who had no intent of being near a swimming pool.
(Then again, if the swimming pool lobby were as demented as the NRA, even criticizing open-carry swimming pool users would demand a swift apology…)
*Edited for precision.
Wow. This is just asinine. Or is it sophomoric? Juvenile, about the level of a 7 grade debating club? You know how to copy-paste statistics that are in no way relevant to this discussion. Is your purpose: 1) to win people over by the robustness of your argumentation? 2) to impress people with your contrarian cleverness? 3)Show that you are a clueless horse’s ass? Inquiring minds want to know.
This non-inquiring mind doesn’t want to know.
Ignoratio elenchi. The equivalency lies in the fact that Canadian gun nuts can be just a lethal as the home-grown US variety. Besides, it’s rarer in Canada than in the US because Canada has fewer people and fewer guns. The population of Canada is about 35 million compared to well over 300 million in the US. In Canada 32% of homicides are by firearm for a rate of 0.51 firearm homicides. In the US, 50% of homicides are by firearm for a rate of 2.97. The US has about 270,000,000 civilian-owned firearms while Canada has about 9,500,000. This data is for 2012 (http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list).
But like religious fundamentalists, a gun nut is a gun nut wherever he may be. No nation has a monopoly on lunacy.
I’m not calling you an imbecile, Fool—can I call you that for short?—because that would be abusive, but in general any imbecile could tell you without bothering to look that our drowning stats are probably comparable with any other country with a similar population, number of recreational swimmers boaters etc. Our shooting victims are vastly higher proportionally than any other country. And there’s a reason that’s unique to our country, Fool. Any imbecile with a modicum of reasoning ability knows that.
Just read in USA Today that the shooter used a shotgun and was subdued when he stopped to reload. Just like Jared Loughner, the Gabrielle Giffords shooter—if you’ll recall, he was subdued while attempting to reload, and some knucklehead who was carrying ran up and damn near shot someone who was helping subdue him. And just to forestall the resident trolls who may pop up—Libs, I mean you—that helps argue that limiting magazine capacity and reloading speed (as in military rifles) fucking well matters. If yesterday’s mass shooter, our shooter du jour if you will, had been using what you’re pleased to call a “scary black AR-15” he’d have been able to keep shooting. So do us a favor and don’t even bother posting.
