Absolutely. It is a numbers game. The NRA can talk gun safety all they want, but, when they are marketing guns (and fighting gun restrictions) by persuading them that having quick access to a loaded firearm is essential protection for home and loved ones, they are guaranteeing that a growing number of children will find and fire guns with tragic results.
Real firearm safety doesnāt come from classes, posters, public-service announcement, or the various versions of the 4 or 5 rules of firearm safety. Weāve had TPM commenters who are gun owners tell us several times that safety, to them, means guns unloaded and locked up, with ammunition locked up in a separate place. The NRA itself knows that gun safety means guns arenāt loaded until you are ready to use them, and that guns must be stored where unauthorized persons cannot access them.
This NRA safety advice is drowned out by the NRAās constant refrain that the sooner a good guy can be on the scene with gun in hand, the safer. The news is full of evidence that good guys carrying loaded guns are far from perfect. More imperfect good guys carrying guns more often to more places can only mean more inadvertent shootings.
Related to this only because it involves a gun. Was picking up a prescription and the guy in front of me was wearing a gun in a holster. Second time Iāve encountered that in a public business. First time was an oil change place. Just really weird to see someone in person that feels the need to carry a gun on display in public. First guy was 50 something white guy, this second time was a 20-30 something black guy with dreadlocks.
Bet peopleās reactions are more than a little bit different!
Oh no. Law abiding gun owner has already suffered enough, Besides the tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of five-year old girlsā¦
Yeah, most likely dad was playing with the gun and shoot his daughter. Bastard!
The one that had been playing with his gun and shot his daughter.
What would be an acceptable reason for not at minimum charging this father with negligent homicide and parking his ass in jail for a few years, coupled with a lifetime ban on the possession or ownership of a weapon? The justice system is in theory supposed to act as a deterrent to future crime, via members of society observing the penalty others pay for violating the laws. Yet parents again and again walk away from these crimes essentially unscathed by the justice system. Kids kill themselves with their parentās negligently stored guns and the local DA decides āNothing to see here, move along.ā Why?
The kind of fucking gullible idiot that believes having a loaded gun around makes you and your loved ones safer. These are the tools of the NRA.
This is why the NRA membership is dying, so to speak.
