Discussion: Pittsburgh Mayor: Take Guns From Those 'Looking To Express Hatred Through Murder'

That’s fine. But let’s run a parallel track where we require a not-easy-to-get* license to buy heavily taxed ammunition. For anybody who feels this would be unfair to “the vast majority of law-abiding gun-owners”, you’re right. It is. Get over it.

*certified training, mandatory liability insurance, at a minimum.

Agreed and liability insurance…

I think requiring liability insurance is one of the best ideas ever. I know why they don’t want to do it but it makes no sense for the rest of us.

Pennsylvania considered a red flag law in 2018, but the NRA killed it.

From my personal experience, there is certified, then there is CERTIFIED. As I wrote yesterday on a thread about Pittsburg, I had a neighbor that is totally irresponsible with handling guns, however, he is a “certified” police weapons safety instructor. Therefore the police will do squat about his walking around with chambered, safety off, weapons that he drops at least a couple of times per week.

Insurance as well as taxing the hell out of ammo…

I’m definitely thinking of the all-caps kind.

I would be gobsmacked if ANY ins.company would insure gun owners. I don’t know how this works, but I would expect home ins. companies to charge gun owners more for having guns in their houses (or they ahould).

I am so depressed about the gun situation in this country. It is simply ridiculous we do not have decent laws in place to limit gun ownership.

The Second Amendment continues to outlive the growing number of victims of gun violence.

I’m not a violent person, but it’s time to kill the Second Amendment.

And, that not being likely, as others suggest we need to:

Ban assault weapons, and take away those that are already out there.
Ban high-capacity magazines.
Promote and provide mental health care.
Liability insurance required for guns.
High taxes on ammo at sale, and annual personal weapon taxes on guns.
Training and Certification, with required continuing education and re-certification.
Register each gun.
Red Flag laws.
More.
We do a lot of the registration, certification, licensing, taxing. insurance, … for other things. If guns are so goddamned important to people, they’ll just have to do these things to keep their precious.

Might want to check out Kevin McCarthy’s erratic behavior. After dodging a major nepotism scandal just a week ago, the #2 Republican in the House is back pouring gasoline on the anti-semitism fire. Right now Nate Silver gives him an over 99% chance of being re-elected.

What that little weird graphic? Only half a swastika?

Thanks Mayor. No doubt you’re trudging into a rhetorical shitstorm of dismissal, insults, and personal threats.

Question I’d like to see the “thoughts and prayers” crowd asked as they frown through Sunday talk shows: Is Trump’s hate speech intended to incite radical right-wing domestic terrorists, or is that just an unintended consequence?

And all three billionaires are Jewish. You’d think McCarthy would have at least stuck one Blue Blood in there. But why hide anymore? Ten days to go.

I have to have 900/yr liability insurance to pick up a paintbrush, and
250/yr liability insurance to do massage, as well as mandatory CEs and relicensing every 2 years.

To require the same for guns seems pretty modest and reasonable.

Not only liability insurance, but there also needs to be a yearly exam for mental stability, eyesight etc.

You know Texas was talking about passing a law making it legal for blind people to have guns.

Actually, I am surprised that TX does not allow blind to own guns. How progressive of them.

Here in MO a couple of years ago they passed a no permit/training needed for conceal carry. You go to the store, you pass a background check, you pay for your gun and ammo, and you can walk around with a concealed gun.
The reasoning behind it was the fees and time it took to #1 get the training and #2 cost of the license. CWPs have to be renewed. Now if you want to carry concealed in other states you have to get the permit. So the big question is “Do I feel safer?” and the answer is no, and neither do LEOs. They now have to treat each and every interaction with the public as if that person in armed. But hey the GOP loves the Police.

I don’t know what became of the proposal but they sincerely argued that blind people shouldn’t have to miss out on the fun of being a gun owner.
