Discussion for article #231892
We had similar worldwide rallies after 9/11. The streets of Tehran had tens of thousands marching against terrorism and in favor of the US.
Then the Bush Admin took all that great worldwide support and decided to use it as an excuse to invade Iraq when Saddam was actually an enemy of Al Qaeda. Yes, Saddam was a thug, but he was contained and was definitely not liked by Al Qaeda.
Yes, the Bush Admin basically became the #1 recruiters for Al Qaeda. Just totally messed up the entire globe.
The âstateâ of cynical nihilism which is arguably geocentric to Saudi Arabia has itâs archaic misinterpretation in a dark ages tinged philosophy and ignores the historicity of the Muslim beliefs. All because of this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_ibn_Abd_al-Wahhab
Were there any representatives from the house of Saud locking arms?

"The February 27, 1928, issue of Time magazine, describes how Eveâs tomb was destroyed: âTo His Majesty Ibn Saud, warlike Sultan of Nejd and King of the Hejaz, came tidings last week of his flourishing son the Amir Faisal, 19-year-old Viceroy of the Hejaz. The tidings were conveyed 500 miles by motor caravan from the Red Sea town of Jidda in the Hejaz, to the Sultanâs inland capital, Riyadh, in Nejd.â
I donât know. I saw two Arab leaders with headdress and all near Hollande. The president of Mali linked arms with Hollande.
For some reason the two or three most recent stories posted on TPM have disabled comments so Iâll park my screed here. It tangentially concerns this story anyway. Senator Graham is whining about Obama sending Eric Holder instead of going himself and he also wants Obama to say this is a war on Islam. Firstly I strongly doubt that the Secret Service will be comfortable putting the President of the United Stated be he democrat or republican in the middle of an unvetted crowd of 1.5 million people. It would be a security nightmare of epic proportions. Secondly Holderâs primary reason for going to Paris wasnât this rally. It was a meeting set up before the terrorist acts happened. So Grahamâs interpretation that Obama sees these acts as simply a law enforcenemt issue is flat wrong. Otherwise we wouldnât have sent thousands of our troops to two different wars for the last 14 years.
Jeebers Lindsey, get current would ya?
The extremists have called our war on terror a war on Islam. Apparently Graham wants to as well. If we held a war on Islam weâd be abrogating one of our core fundamental American values which happens to be freedom of conscience (or you could call it freedom to believe what you wantâŚor freedom of religion)
Therefore I take it that Senator Graham is against freedom of religion.
Things have changed somewhat on the Arabian peninsula since 1928.
And if I remember correctly, it was the Bush Admin who coined and marketed the phrase âWar on Terrorâ. Obama says it, and now he is a terrorist⌠what a clown Graham is.
Itâs hard to overstate just how much damage the bush administration did by invading Iraq though some of the terrorists weâre seeing today were active before 9/11.
Agreed, I did not say they invented terrorists, just that they were great recruiters. How many of these guys got pumped up by Abu Grahib and Guantanamo? Lots.
Donât give Graham the big headlines. Heâs as stupid as Romney when he got caught out during the debates. If anyone has fought terrorists better or more smartly than Obama let Graham name him. Remember Obama got bin Laden and Al Awalki , before we even knew who that guy was.
And how about that Hollande! The supposed weakling got the heads of several Islamic countries, including TURKEY, to come to this mass demonstration of support for freedom of speech âŚ
Al Jazeera has it in the millions.
There was a letter in todayâs Orygonian with an idea that I liked.
What if media stopped calling them âterroristsâ and started referring to them as âcowardsâ. And using âacts of cowardiceâ instead of âacts of terrorismâ
Persuading media the world over to do this would be like herding cats but Iâd be willing to bet that over time it would have an impact.
A thought that I had, but one that would never be enactedâŚtoo draconian, would be to take pictures of dead cowards bodies immersed in vats of pig offal for media use. I wonder if the cowards would be as motivated to martyr themselves if they knew what would become of their earthly remains.
I went on the msn.com site to read about this rally and half the commenters were bitching about Obama not being there. You guessed it, lots of vitriolic comments, cracks about golfing on weekends, no respect for France, solidarity with his moslem :âbrothers,â etc.
I need another shower after reading it.
Well, why werenât Graham. Cruz, Mittens, Crash and the other nattering nabobs of negativity over there?
Theyâre very importent people arenât they?
Nothing prevented all the idjet warmongers on the right from heading across the pond to Paris. They have more money than I do for such things although I am saving for a trip myself in 2016 to France. I happen to love the place. In my case it requires advance planning and cash allocation to be able to pull it off. I donât have access to big time donors and corporate jets like Lindsey does. That Lindsey and the others didnât attend the rally and just bitched about it from their bar stool shows they just wanna toss derp without any responsibility.
Mrs darr told me 3 million turned out for the rally. CNN had it variously from 1.5 to 2 million depending on the reporter. That size of a crowd could not possibly fit in the squaren they chose for the rally (place de la Republique). but it is the heart of the republic in a way. Place de la Concorde is much bigger. It might be able to house the lower figure. In any care the quoted numbers represent a significant percentage of the population of Paris. I really wish I couldâve been there.
I like the idea of the Prophetâs name change.
I was also disappointed that we didnât see any US representation in that line of world leaders, but Canada and Australia were also absent. I have not seen any explanation of that.
Was it Graham or another right-wing war-monger who said a few days ago that, when a terrorist attack occurs on a Presidentâs watch, it shows heâs weak. So, by that logic, George W. was the weakest of them all, right? And with that attack on the Marine base in Lebanon, Reagan was pretty weak, too, I guess.
I read that this was a hastily put together event for which the logistics of flight time and security clearance prevented the President from attending. Also, the long flight time might explain the absence of Canada, Australia and Japanâs leaders.
I did read that our ambassador to France was there.
The Kouachi brothers claimed the attacks were planned and financed by al-Qaida in Yemen.
Hm, so those drone attacks have a down side after all.
