Discussion: Pence Backs Down: Calls For Clarification Barring Any Kind Of Discrimination

So now that Pence has all the major GOP presidential candidates backing him and his dumb law, he backtracks and pulls the rug out from all the GOP presidential candidates? Nice work, Hillary

I dunno, I’d say that the federal version is no prize either.

Remember, that was the justification by the SC for the Hobby Lobby (bad) decision.

See? For the love o’ Pete, how hard was that? PROTECT your citizens instead of giving people and businesses the right to humiliate them and treat them as second-class citizens. Jeesh.

A “clarification” bill won’t stop the hemorrhaging…the wound is far too deep now for that. The only hope is a repeal of the law at this point. And of course, that will costs him dearly in the GOTP circles. He is painted into a corner of his own making, and has already pulled the trigger on the gun pointing at his foot. He can either mess up the paint and push for a repeal, or bleed to death sitting in the corner.

It was pointed out in Georgia…by a republican no less…who had the audacity to propose an amendment clarifying that their law (basically the same as this one) cannot be used to discriminate. Rest of the GOP legislature went ballistic, even stating that that was indeed the entire purpose of the law! The amendment passed, and the immediately tabled the entire bill because of it.

The fig leave is well and gone on this nonsense, and no amount of “not asking the question”, or being stonewalled when asked, by the media is going to put it back.

Really, the choice is pretty simple…Keep the law in place and continue to suffer humiliating and economic repercussions until it eventually makes it way into the courts and is found unconstitutional, or cut their losses now and repeal the damn thing.

Excellent. Thank you for that.

In answer to your question, it is looking like most of the GOP Presidential field is going down with the “sinking bigot barge”. More power to them!

Clarification= we effed it up.
The difference between the indiana law and others of a similar ilk is Indiana’s concerns no governmental entity. The others concern government and someone else. That is the bigotry entrance for Indiana.

LOL. Didn’t the law EXPLICITLY say that businesses could refuse services to people if it allegedly conflicted with their religious beliefs? And now we’re getting the “that doesn’t mean what it literally says” treatment? MSM asleep at the switch again.

IOKIYAR

I totally agree. I was reserving judgment on Pence, never having seen him in action. I’ve seen enough to know that he’s a two-faced dirt bag.

He is lying that this law is just like the federal law. If someone wishes to defend him as an illiterate moron, I will listen. The IN law has no meaning except to immunize anyone who is sued for discrimination once they say, “It’s my faith that made me do it.” But this guy is a weasel, saying that the law does not legalize discrimination. If he really meant what he said, he would support a law that protected the rights of gays. But he won’t because he really believes that someone’s religious freedom is impinged on if the person is obliged to respect all the rights and the human dignity of fellow CITIZENS. It’s pretty simple.

Pence is the plural of penny so even from day one this guy has been about MONEY.

Right now Pence is hard at work trying to figure a way to mollify both business and homophobic religious zealots. Whatever is crafted will be just enough to put business in the position of being uncomfortable continuing in their flight from Indiana. However, it will also hold out hope for the homophobes they can be bigoted, hateful assholes and when push comes to shove get away with it. Pence has national aspirations, he can’t forfeit unless it’s done in a vague, ambiguous manner that provides plausible deniability to the rabid Right base he’s still in the fight.

The Onion is doing straight news now? Satire is dead.

Wriggling on the hook. He has killed any potential presidential aspirations he might have had, probably any possible elected office in Indiana, and he knows it.

As far as the prez candidates go, their support of this will help them in the primaries, but whoever goes to the general will have his support of this turkey hung around his neck.

so how’s he gonna get the nomination now?

Maybe it was meant to make the unicorn the official state horsie and the legislature just got carried away.

I don’t understand what Pence has asked for. Is this an accurate recording of his comments or is the man obfuscating?

“it would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses to deny services to anyone,”

Is that English?

“which bars Indiana from forcing businesses to serve customers based on religious objections to sexual orientation, currently does not allow discrimination.”

Except it DOES allow it. What a tool.
