Discussion: Pence Backs Down: Calls For Clarification Barring Any Kind Of Discrimination

A number of reporters have tried to ask that, and they have yet to get anything but vague answers. Because of course the true purpose of the law was to allow businesses to deny service to gay couples, at the very least. There is film of its supporters saying just that.

Points for the Tolkien reference. [g]

I have always wondered what the hospitals in this country did with all of the foreskins removed during circumcision. Now I know the answer - they built Mike Pence.

Duh, no big surprise here. The surprise will be if Pence gets it right the second time because he’s still in full weasel mode. He doesn’t want to touch his pet law and he believes in his pet law but there aren’t enough wingnuts to get him to where he wants to be, Gay basher heaven.

Pence is now having to publicly praise the Gay community and say that anyone can love anyone that they want and just how awful discrimination is. That’s gotta hurt and it makes it pretty hard to kind of discriminate and attempt to veil it.

Pence in his ultimate wisdom has become the great defender of all things Gay.

The governor has a proPENCEity to be an asshole. I do not know why he kept everyone in susPENCE about this press conference, since he didn’t say anything new. The exPENCE to Indiana businesses and to Indiana’s reputation because of this law will be huge. I hope they get sued for their bigotry and the plaintiffs are awarded just comPENCEation. I wonder PENCEively about the outcome of this matter.

“Clarification” is bullshit. The law needs to be REPEALED and replaced with the federal version of RFRA.

This is the danger for Republican governors—they actually have to govern, or at least go through the motions of doing so. Senators like Cruz just have to flap their gums.

I can’t recall another instance when a politician has so throughly screwed himself. When the dust settles on this mess, Indiana has no choice but to either scrap this law or, at a minimum, yank out its teeth. When they do, Pence will be bashed from the left for being a bigot, from the right for allowing the liberals and gays to set policy and from the center for putting Indiana through the ringer. Great job Governor.

Liar.

Then what is the point of the law?
What specific behavior does it prevent?

Why Oh Why does the $)#)$*&#( media not ask these OBVIOUS questions until an actual answer is forthcoming?

Much as I hate them, at least Billo’s “producers” won’t quit harassing their target until they get a response. We can’t even get the old 60 Minutes tenacity out of what passes for journalists anymore.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the new “clarification” will focus very narrowly on business “serving” customers, while still leaving the ability to discriminate in hiring.

And how are the bakers and florists going to feel about that?

Isn’t anyone going to protect their delicate religulous-ness?

“I don’t believe for a minute that it was the intention of the General Assembly to create a license to discriminate, or a right to deny services to gays, lesbians or anyone else in this state. And it certainly wasn’t my intent,” Pence added. “But I can appreciate that that’s become the impression – not just here in Indiana, but all across this country. And we need to confront that.”

Pence has passed on every opportunity to say the law does not in fact provide an easier legal avenue for merchants and businesses to refuse service to the LGBT community. His Sunday ABC news interview with George Stephanopoulos was painful to watch for all the flailing about he did on the question---6 times. Combine pictures of him at a signing desk surrounded by a who's who of Indiana homophobes and his intent is clear. He's a lying piece of s**t.

Exactly. If Pence can’t see that businesses refusing to serve a customer due to “objections to sexual orientation” is the very definition of discrimination, he is a completely lost cause. As if that hadn’t been clear already.

The question is, how much of the rest of the GOP will go down with him on this sinking bigot barge?

Pence stressed that the law, which currently allows Indiana businesses to refuse service to customers based on religious objections to sexual orientation, does not currently allow Indiana businesses to refuse service to customers based on religious objections to sexual orientation.

Thanks for the clarification, Mike!

When big corporations threaten vacating Indiana -

It becomes clear that the love of $$$$$$ is far stronger than love of humanity.

Can’t say I ever wondered that myself, but you may be correct.

And if you somehow could be convinced that the point of the law is not to deny…, then it is nothing but obvious, blatant pandering.
