It’s a broadly held conclusion, though. The public didn’t like Kain’s ankle-biting style in the debates.
I loved the knowing chuckles and head shakes as his Kaine once again claimed Trump said something that we’ve all heard Trump say. It added a nice surreal touch.
rotfl…And the Rightie TrumpPenceZees’ are out in force this morning, clinging desperately to any positive word about LyinMike’s performance.
I lost a ‘sock’ at Deadbart pretty quickly while doing a little baiting and trolling early today. Still, it was fun! ![]()
In the meantime… (click to see the embedded video)
What was up with the “war on coal”?
Means the war on oil is next. Then the war on drug companies or whatever industry of American Greatness the commie dictators of the left decide to destroy. It’s wearing a little thin though, because most folks realize that competition from cheap natgas is what decreased coal use.
Lying and talking point skill are taught at the GOP Factory. The idea was to use that against the GOP. Hill’s Campaign team also KNEW that fuckers like AP (see a TPM entry to-day about “AP fact checking”) would make their attempt to “make both sides equally having untrue statements”.
But in the case of Pence, Kaine was able to goad him into two fatal errors:
(1) Disassociation from Trump…meaning that Pence does not support his top of his ticket
(2) Saying things on record as being untrue [both (1) and (2) readily suitable for ads]
In fact, it may have been part of the plan to get charlatans like Chris Mathews and Nicolle Wallace to anoint Pence the “winning new face” of the Trump campaign. Trump seems to hurt himself as much when he’s over-confident as when he feels he is being wronged…and
(1) above can be used by Hill to insult Trump to the nth degree
(2) above can give Trump some word-salad lies to make him think his campaign is on the rebound**
** Notwithstanding the spin of crypt-keeper-esque Hugh Hewitt and others like him, Pence is not going to change the trajectory of Trump’s campaign…at least according to Sam Wang’s recent assessment over at Princeton Electoral Consortium
A nod to Gerkins of Truth: “All the polls indicate everyone on the planet clearly preferred Mike Pence’s extremely well-received squints, over the useless facts and figures blathered about by Mr. Kaine”
From Electoral Vote website, to-day:
“In terms of a ‘winner’ and a ‘loser,’ CNN’s post-debate poll gave the nod to Pence by a margin of 48% to 42%. That seems about right; the two men essentially tied on substance (or lack thereof), and Pence won the ‘mute’ test: With the sound off, he looked a bit more presidential. Pence likely also benefited from lower expectations, since he has a slightly lower national profile than Kaine, and since his running mate has set the bar rather low.”
THAT looks close to M.O.E. numbers to me…
I could only stand about 2 minutes of Pence smirking before I had to turn the debate off.
Tim Kaine looks like your favorite uncle you look forward to seeing during the holidays.
Mike Pence looks like he was one of the defendants at the Nuremberg trials.
Mike Pence is a living stock photo.
I am not denying that the content of what he said was not good. But why not just calmly state “Governor Pence just stated such and such, video tape is going to prove him wrong after the debate”. Do that often, yes. But don’t interrupt Pence constantly. Just let him finish and calmly state he was lying and that video will prove it. That’s how Obama handled it. Kaine just looked silly and childish with the interrupting.
Disagree.
I watched the debate last night, and came away with three things:
-
An intense desire to see a shrink because if Mike Pence is living in the same reality I am, then I must be clearly insane. My head hurt after listening to him, my throat was hoarse from screaming at the TV, and my dinner came up, literally, about halfway through because I could not stomach it and Pence’s idiocies at the same time.
-
Mike Pence was dropped from the primaries for a reason - he is only as good a puppet as the puppet master who pulls his strings, so appearing more calm and reasoned in this debate is not all that hard. The man, if you have followed his politics, is nothing like what he tried to portray himself as last night.
-
Kaine had multiple problems - including the fact that he could have used some very damaging facts to take down Pence, but let him slide far too often. Sadly, my first impression of Kaine was that he was trying to outdo Trump in number of interruptions and while his comments were on point occasionally, far too often they seemed to be aimed at just needling Pence.
The moderator of this debate failed from the very outset to control this debate and that made it difficult to follow or hear. Sadly, both men seemed to fail in their ability to move the needle for either presidential candidate, one because he is a liar and an apparent religious idiot, the other because he was trying to be a pitbull when it was unnecessary and when by using real facts, he could have easily won.
I am still reeling from that debate - and wondering if the real world I live in is even remotely like the one Pence seems to inhabit (I hope not). I do not want to watch what will happen on Sunday night at the presidential debate, but like so many others, I am drawn to it, like watching a train wreck in slow motion, only this time I am on the train. UGH!!!
“Donald Trump and I would never support legislation that punished women who made the heartbreaking choice to end a pregnancy. We just never would.”
We’d never do that (fingers crossed behind back)…we would just pass laws like the one I did in Indiana that’s stops women from having any choice at all over their own bodies and health…because, you know, they’re women after all. And must do what men say!
About the time hell freezes over. Dishonest Don is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, his protestations to the contrary.
Truly smart people don’t need to boast about having the best brain just as truly wealthy people (I’ve known a few) don’t need to boast about their wealth. By their fruits you shall know them.
Yes, it was frustrating to watch, especially when Pence was in the process of hanging himself, and Kaine insisted on cutting the rope.
Kaine needs to learn patience and strategy from Jedi Master Clinton.
As noted above, Josh seems to have nailed it. The distillate from this debates is “that Mexican thing.”
The GOP lives in the reality they have created. It’s almost like they’ve successfully gaslighted themselves.
These were my reactions as well. And I couldn’t believe how much of a non-presence the moderator was. She was utterly unprepared to regulate two professional gasbags doing what they do. It was her first time moderating anything. Couldn’t she have started with a state-level debate?
