“We have said all along, ‘Poor Facebook, they were unwittingly exploited by the Russians,’” Pelosi told local California radio station KQED. “I think wittingly, because right now they are putting up something that they know is false. I think it’s wrong.”
The Speaker -one of the most powerful people in all of Washington -is letting Zuckerberg know in no uncertain terms he better get off his ass and fix the problem. Also putting Facebook on notice for any shenanigans in 2020. No excuses will be tolerated.
In this case, the doctoring is obvious.
What should Facebook be required to do when doctoring is not obvious?
“We think it’s important for people to make their own informed choice about what to believe,”
And as long as we continue to make money on it we are going to leave it up there.
Someone needs to start asking the pointed question-- how much advertising revenue is associated with this video now, what’s Facebook’s cut of that.
It’s all about the Benjamins.
And then Zuck cries when someone tells him the algorithms no longer work
I think they should take down that doctored video of FatNixon, too. Y’know, where they played him backwards and he actually made sense?
“the social media giant wouldn’t take down the video because it doesn’t promote violence Daily Caller, a pro-Trump propaganda outfit that FB made part of its review team, threatened FB In no uncertain with an anti-FB-censorship propaganda shitstorm and lawsuits if it decided to speak truth to power”
FIFY
“by not taking down something they know is false — that they were willing enablers of the Russian interference in our election,” she continued.”
We know everything from trump is false.
By not starting impeachment inquiry are we not enabling Putin?
I’ve been wondering, though, if Pelosi could bring a civil suit focused on misappropriation of her likeness and defamation of character, targeting all the revenue that the video is generating for Facebook.
“I think they have proven — by not taking down something they know is false — that they were willing enablers of the Russian interference in our election,”
Ah, the famous Fox News gambit.
Tough sell. Just ask Nunes.
It really is a steep climb to prove defamation against a public figure. I could see it against a deep pro-Trump campaign operative who created the video, which was then repeatedly used to malign Pelosi, thereby maybe clearly the malice hurdle, but against FB? I dunno how you’d prove malice there.
Facebook is toast when Democrats retake the white house and all of congress, they will be broken up and regulated which needed to be done years ago with a social media.
Meh, maybe strike the defamation part, keep it simple and on the copyright portion. Pelosi as the owner of her likeness, the filmers of the original video as the copyright holders of that. Closer?
I’m not an IP guy, but that strikes me as weak too. Besides, this is one I think she should suck up and deal with. We don’t want to be helping the GOP with their goal of forcing social media to help them.
Yes, but she should go further, and sue Trump and the video creator, Gulliani, etc as well as facebook for libel per se. It is a violation of the libel laws to state with actual malice (knowing the falsity of what is said) that someone is addled and unable to perform their job.
Given that the fact the video is a fake is all over, it would not be hard to prove.
If it was going to be a one-off, sure, I’d say shrug it off and move on. But since we can be fairly certain that this is only the opening salvo of a LOOOOONG 2020 campaign, seems like working on ways to disincentivize maintaining these on Facebook and other platforms is relevant.
If you targeted them as being in violation of Fair Use, could end up in takedowns or forfeiture of the ad revenue.
“Join Facebook, where circumspection, reason, discretion, and self restraint are never allowed to interfere with your propensities.”
Sheryl Sandberg was brought in to monetize whatever she could at FB. This is the result. I hope anyone who read that warmed over dreck called Leaning In realizes the depths of her insincerity.
