Discussion: Pelosi Says Trump 'Goading' Dems To Impeach Him To Fire Up His Base

Not conducting impeachment proceedings is nothing short of dereliction of duty, not to mention a complete failure of their oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution.”

Regardless of who’s occupying the White House, it’s their goddamned duty, fer chis’sake.

As to whether or not it’s going to fire up his base, he’ll find a way regardless. It’s his whole MO. But more to the point, once the information is finally made public he won’t have enough support to get elected dog catcher at an upstate New York prison.

Suck an egg Nancy.

So Nancy is not going to fulfill her constitutional duty to impeach Trump because she wants to spite him?

The Russians have a name for unwitting accomplices…

And Nancy Pelosi has turned into a “useful idiot” for Trump

I think it might help to do some survey about why potential voters (i.e. independents) don’t want impeachment. If they worry that Dems would have no time left for other issues like healthcare, then we only need to convince them that we can multi-task. If they believe Dems are persecuting Trump, then no hope for the nation.

Pelosi is a brilliant tactician and a lousy strategist.

It may be true that Trump is itching for an impeachment trial, so he can claim to be a victim which he does so well, but what will Democrats do about it? Surely rolling over won’t rally the Democratic base…impeach Barr and Mnuchin! Hold investigations with other witnesses! They’ll held the House for four months and no public hearings so far!

NOT impeaching Trump is likely to prevent the Dem base from solidifying.

I have a number of friends who have stopped voting, even though they loathe everything the GOP does, because they think Dems are “useless and spineless” because “they don’t fight back hard enough to make a difference when they have power”. How can I counter such a view when the Dem leadership says stuff like this??

Wish this wasn’t true, but am coming to believe it is.

Only 29% of independents currently support impeachment…but 53% believe that investigations should continue. Unless democrats can get public opinion behind impeachment then it could backfire with voters who are either soft or disenchanted with Trump. The only way I support impeachment is if you need it to secure documents, testimony and a fully redacted Mueller report…along with his tax returns. The blanket stonewalling by Trump and the administration may cause this to happen…in a slow boiling that neither party can really control. We could get to impeachment over time if enough negative information comes out going forward. Democrats NEED more information through investigation. Trump and his administration will stall for time in any way they can…for as long as they can. They only need to make it to November of 2020.

Certainly the way I’ve begun to think and feel.

The Speaker has become quite effective at talking out of both corners of her mouth to feed the media while she moves on her timetable and pace to respond.

This particular comment is not helpful. I’ve never experienced an election where the GOP base did not turn out to vote.

This is about motivating Dems to turnout. Standing up for your values to hold Trump accountable will energize voters just like standing up for the ACA (an improbable win) and against the tax cut (a predictable loss) and against Kavanaugh (a loss that ended up driving up the Dems share of the female vote) did.

The thing I dislike most about this particular comment is that Pelosi is revealing that Trump lives in her head. Everything she is doing is reactive instead of looking at the power she has and the evidence that is right in front of her. What Trump does or says at this point doesn’t matter. You can impeach based on what we have now and also on the assumption that he will frustrate oversight.

Having said that, she also said some comments that I do agree with, that we have to focus on evidence and that this is one of those momentous events that demands action.

Trump is now moving to keep Mueller from testifying. Dems can’t let that stand.

Well, don’t forget that she is a grandmother.

It would be nice if Pelosi thought about solidifying the Democratic base once in a while.

Here are her up-to-date excuses not to impeach Trump:

“not worth it”
“too divisive”
“not bipartisan”
“too good for him”
“easy way out”
“he’s goading us”

History will record her cowardice.

Pelosi has stood by her position that trying to impeach Trump would be “wasting” Democrats’ time without Republican support in the Senate.

Sort of like the House trying to exercise Constitutionally permitted oversight of the Executive Branch is a waste of time, also.

It’s not good to live in moral or political muddle. Pelosi has to step up.
